After starting golf in september, I finally started to have some consistency, breaking 100 two weeks ago and shooting low hundreds over the past month.

Yesterday i played a course, where i have never played well mind you, and shot 119! i havent shot that since the first few weeks of starting!

my chipping and driveing was terrible, the only thing that was remotley ok was my long irons, with all my 8, 9,p and s irons going of the back as my ranges from the driving ranges compared to a course with better balls are obv well off.

my misery was compounded when i was just of the green in two on the longest par four on the course, leaving me to chip over a bunker about 5 yards to get on the green. i ended up getting a nine! a nine!

anyway im just looking some words of advice as i dont want to undo all my progession. im playing again tonight on a diff course and i dont feel confident at all.

thanks

it happens to us all just try and forget it and start a fresh tonight, maybe you had negative vibes before you went out with the 'course i never play well at thought?'
try and spot the distance errors early on and take 1/2 clubs less? mosy of all try and enjoy while the suns out before the usual bqank holiday weather arrives!

There's only one thing you can do, keep playing. All the words of wisdom in the world, but it's just having another go to crack it. I know, having been ready to jack it in last year after my game flushed round the U Bend, was that close, but kept playing and things just get better.

Your experience is very much in line with mine. I started a year ago and, occasionally, get round in 100 or one or two less. However I am still capable of shooting 110 or more on a bad day. Consistency is difficult to achieve and even the better players have off days.

Keep going and the trend for improvement will continue.

Big variances of scores are not unusual.

I shot 76 gross in last Wednesdays medal and 91 in Sundays - try that for a difference?

yea i think i will start to get some lessons soon enough

i never thought of the neg vibes point pbrown but i def can see what u mean. maybe i did just have a negative outlook without realise. I find when sitting at a tee box, my bad shots on that hole always go through my head. then like a magnet away the ball goes.

after only starting to hit my irons with a bit of consistency i do need to find my range when im on the course more rather than at the range.

i was so annoyed last night i found it hard to sleep which is ridiculous haha. hopefully tonight well see some improvement once again. thanks

thats classic for all of us your start thinking dont go left there water and where do you hit it left! try bob rotella books or similar if you get chance they well worth a read and instaed of thinking of all your bad shots re-run the good ones the drive straight down the middle pitch on 2 putts par it will help.

Its a complete myth that you will continue to improve with every game - golf is a strange one and you will go thro bad patches every now and then and ur convinced ur getting worse and not better. Look at the average scores over a period and hopefully you should see that u are progressing.

fraid you have to take the good with the bad

but enjoy it along the way! ;)

I recently came back to golf myself after a bit of a lay-off (well, nigh on 20 years!) so am in much the same boat. I "find" and "lose" my swing on different days but don't worry too much as I know its going to happen. The tolerances are very fine with the golf swing. You only have to be a smidgeon out here and there at the address end to be yards and yards out at the ball-comes-to-rest end so expect performance to ebb and flow as you improve.

I find it only takes one good shot and I've "got it" again. At least temporarily :D

I played again last night on a different course. After a shakey start i ended up shooting 104. which is more consistent with what iv been shooting recently. so pretty happy with that.

saying that it could have been a lot lower as i get stuck in some massive bunker, taking me at least 3 shots to get out on 3 seperate occasions. if i would have taken one shot in each bunker i would have broken 100 comfortably. so bitter sweet really.

bunker practice is my next port of call!

stu, this game can be cruel and as chrisd highlighted you can shoot career bests and worsts back to back so dont be to hard on yourself.

im a strong beleiver in MOT lessons though. my best form was in november only to be shortly followed by my worst form, all because one little fault crept in. ill now have a monthly MOT just to check things, that worst form place was not nice and i dont want to be back there again in a long while if i can help it.

chin up.

what does your MOT test consist of oddsocks?

just a check over by someone more qualified than me... lol

on a serious note they will just check nothing in the basics have changed, grip, swing plane, posture and set up basically. thats obvioulsy when the game is solid, although when its off they will work on specifics.

Chances are your grip for example doesnt just go from good to bad overnight, it will progressively get worse, so if its picked up in a mot lesson, its address in theory before it becomes a card wrecker.

Like bob suggested though, a short game lesson is a good idea, last night from 4 greens missed i up & down saved 3 of them....
