Re the dull comments I know what folks mean but I'm trying to think of any tennis players who aren't dull. McEnroe and Connors, Roddick and maybe Agassi (off his face) are about the only ones in my time.

Borg - the definition of dull!
Sampras - pretty blooming dull!
Federer - hardly a laugh a minute!
Nadal - moody and pretty dull!
Becker - jumped about on court but monotone dull off it!
Edberg - Swedish utterly dull
Willander - an emotionless stuck on baseline robot!

Come on Andy but I fear the Fed will triumph again. :(

You forgot one of the most dominant dull ones

Ivan Lendl, there you go he was so dull you couldn't remember him. Bloody good player though and not a bad golfer. Wonder what happened to him?

.......... Murray is utterly and completely dull.

Snelly, I can see your point but Beckham was as dull as dish water when he was younger and it took years of PR training and life experience to give him the confidence he has now.

He will never be a PR gurus dream ticket but his work ethic is what young kids should use as a role model and perhaps not professional footballers who want to blame everyone else for theor failings.

I understand what you are saying about work ethic and being a role model - good point, well made.

That said, don't get me started on David Thickham!!! A vastly overrated one trick pony that embraced the hideous celebrity lifestyle with both hands!! Utterly awful.

I won't be supporting him. In fact, I support whoever his opponent is.
I always support the home nations - the Irish in the football, Monty and Woosie in the golf for example but after his comments about the English football team in the World Cup of 2006 he showed his true colours.

Why would anyone Scottish, English, Welsh or any other affiliation to the UK want him to lose?
Go on my Son - get in there!

Because he has publicly stated that he would support anyone/team playing against England in any sport, so as far as I'm concerned he can shove it up his thistley ring.

His 1st serve isn't good enough at the top level, which is bizarre as it's the easiest part of the game to shore up.

Besides, Federer is the best player there has ever been and is a joy to watch and has every aspect of the game. In my book, that means I would rather see the better 'player' win.

I can't beleive that people are still beating him with this Anti-English stick. It was said in jest as has been reported on several occasions since .

Here's a piece from the journalist (Des Kelly from The Daily Mail) who did the actual interview:

Let me return to the topic of Andy Murray and this whole anti-English argument for what I truly hope is the last time - although I doubt it.

Some of the nonsensical criticism Britain's No 1 has received is laced with such misplaced venom and outrage that it makes me despair.

So, for the hard of thinking, let me state here that: I did the interview with Andy Murray and Tim Henman a couple of years back where Murray talked about 'supporting whoever England were playing against'.

It was a clearly a sarcastic remark. He was responding to teasing from your columnist about Scotland's absence from the 2006 World Cup and derisive laughter from the mischievous Henman.

It was reported in that context in this newspaper at the time and the exchange was run as a transcript.

A couple of days later a red-top got excited about the comments, lifted a couple of them into a 'story' that took on a life of its own and from there the truth was lost.

It is astonishing how this has run and run.

An extremely talented columnist pal of mine declared unequivocally the other day that: 'I don't think his remarks about England were a joke. There are some people who just don't like the English and I believe in my marrow that Murray is one of them.'

Based on what?

I did the interview - and it was a joke, as I have said before. And what marrows have to do with it I don't know, but it is certainly time to call a halt when vegetables like David Mellor pop up on the Today programme to lecture Murray about how to wave a Union Flag.

Murray to win. If he can get a major on his CV and stop the huge pressure (think Garcia, Westwood etc never having won a big one) then he'll have more confidence for Wimbledon. Partisan crowd and a preferred surface and who knows maybe a Murray win there too

Dont care either way, not a massive tennis fan but when I did have interest it was with the pure skill of a previous generation of players, not the super powerful smashers you see plenty of today. As for personality, I am sure he has one and one day he may show it to us, but he will never be a great player and showman like players of the past, some already mentioned. Good luck to him, but I dont really care.

Thats one Im going keep up my sleve for someones back swing tomorrow. ;)

I wondered how long it would take before the whole Anti England card would be played. It was in jest end of story.

By the way when an englishman is playing sport I dont mind if they lose. Im quite happy to see them get to finals for the interest but cant be bothered with the media coverage etc and I havent even mentioned '66 crap I just did ;)

Would be good to see Murray win a Major,He has worked hard to get to the top and is a good role model, but not much charisma though.Sadly most sports lack many that would bring a smile to your face.

As with golf, the pro game is more powerful than in the good ol' days.

But the best players don't just rely on power, they have touch as well.

Federer has the greatest all round game since Borg made it all about power, but then, Murray has been playing a great balance of power and guile himself.

This could be either a) a walkover for Feds, or b) one of the greatest finals of all time.

I'm voting for b)

Personally, I couldn't care less if a Celt/Celtic team are playing in anything whether they win or lose unless they are representing GB, and even then I'm less fussed about non-English GB participants. I only care about England/English results as that is where I'm from. The idea that I should be interested in/support Celtic nations/individuals is lost on me.

It amuses me that the Celts are permitted to slate England/English teams mercilessly, but the English are expected to keep quiet on the matter.

As it happens, the fact that Murray is Scottish is of no interest to me. I'd rather he didn't win regardless if he was Scottish, Spanish, Italian or Australian because I don't like the man - not where he comes from.

Just to be clear, I love the banter between us and the Celts, I just don't like it when it goes too far and that the Celts appear to have a different set of rules to play by in the matter.

Oh well, best prepare for the flaming!

i'm rooting for him and dont realy care about the posts slagging him off along with the dour comments regarding his personality. on a golfing forum tiger is/was hardly "a joke a minute" type of guy is/was he. He would walk off a green while his partner was still playing so lets get the winning mentality in perspective and refrain from the biased reasons for not getting behind the guy
