As some of you may know.....I started playing golf 6 months ago and things are just starting to come together now that I understand what I need to be doing.

Over the past week I've been using trying to make sure that I release my hips on the down-swing.

Today on the range it finally came together and I was able to hit my 7 iron 170 yards, whereas before I could hit it 150 yards.

I had read that using your hips generates more power but I wasn't aware of just how much!

I'm more than happy with that kind of distance as long as I can keep it straight. But as time goes on and as I get better at releasing my hips, I might be able to squeeze out a bit more yardage.

Exciting times :-)

I started to do this after watching a clip of Rory.
It works, but it was too painful for me,i had hip pain as a result.
Currently working on taking an extra club and hitting it smoother.

Don't get too hooked up on distance
150-160 is more than enough with a 7 iron - it now becomes more important to be able to hit that distance consistently. No point in hitting one 7iron 170 and the next 150. Distance control is almost more important that distance itself.
If you need more then take another club

This is my one current swing thought! I am trying to start my down swing with my hip turn. This isnt to get straight distance, more to come at the ball from the inside. It creates a bit more room . It is working pretty well and my ball striking has improved!

the hip turn itself doesnt generate power it makes you drive at the ball more. without a decent hip turn the swing becomes armsy (if thats a word lol)

the reason I post this is as a 28 capper this is my toughest thing to overcome and something I am working on with my pro albeit not much over the last month.

If I get the turn correctly I get a bit more distance, not through extra power alone but it also becomes a draw. Unfortunately I am still trying to ingrain it and so my powerfade/slice still prevails for most shots. I also tend to revert back to my old swing during rounds hence January is more range less course for me

I feel much more in control.
I know it sounds silly, but after reading another thread recently,i noticed a few people
trying this.
So i thought i would give it a try,and even though its far from perfect, the
bad shots are less destructive.

Gotta disagree with that one i am afraid - the largest muscles, and therefore the ones that really generate power in a golf swing are the lower back muscles and your thighs - the biggest mass of muscles in your body.
The use of teh hips in eth backswing and downswing are what mobilises that mass and gets the swing speed up and teh distance up.

Although, an overactive hip rotation is the quickest wasy to duck hooks and big slices, so dont get addicted to the extra distance too quickly :)
