Going to get my irons custom fit and hopefully find a new driver at the local AG... having read a couple of negative posts about the place I'm not sure what to expect ?

Any experiences from you guys ?

If they have an indoor monitor that measures your carry and other stats, take the readings with a pinch of salt.

Come to think of it. Will you be fitted hitting a ball indoors, or does your AG have an outside range?

Go to a good pro instead. AG fittings are hit and miss, and you may not know which until after you have the equipment. They also have a reputation of pushing the brands with the highest profit margins to them, and also amping up the launch monitors to help persuade you, often with patently incredulous data.

They also give excellent service, I've never had an issue and a lot of good comments from people here also.

Are you using the ones at MK Jack? If so they are pretty good there normally, that said Id still want an outside range when buying new irons personally

I visited an AG once and demoed a driver. With 102 mph swing speed, I carried the ball 280 yards. I asked the youthful assistant if he thought that was credible, and he said they often had people with similar readings. I told him there was no way that was accurate unless we were at 10,000 feet altitude (and I don't think Camberley is that high).

I later played golf with a former AG store manager who told me they did amp up the machines to make sales. I have no doubt that a lot of people have been conned into buying unsuitable equipment. I also played golf with a strong hard hitting bloke who had been "fitted" into an A flex Nicklaus hybrid, which he snap hooked all day long because it was at least 2 flexes out for him. Even an idiot would have known this club was totally unsuitable for him.

I would never ever buy equipment there unless I knew exactly what I wanted and couldn't get it anywhere else.

I've bought most of my stuff from the one in Cardiff. I go there because of the range of stock they carry.

If I were getting custom fitted I would probably go elsewhere though.

My last purchase was a RBZ 3 wood. I'd used one before but still had a few hits with it in the computerised net. The sales asistand gave me all the marketing talk but didnt even ask me what my handicap was. If someone is trying out any clubs surely that would be the first thing you ask?

I've got a £50 american golf voucher/card if someone wants it for £40 to save them a tenner then PM me. Nothing that I really need at the moment.

I went to my local american golf as being a left hander my club didnt have any irons to try. I just went and tried 3 different sets of irons. Found the one that i liked the best. Callaway Raxr Tour then went to the Callaway centre in Chessington to get properly fitted.

I think with these places, if it's your only option, you need to prove the simulator accuracy so take your current kit and see how the yardages stack up against what you know to be true.
Then keep an eye on the assistant to ensure it's not being amended, occasionally switch back to your own gear unexpectedly.
I did this when I was looking for a hybrid and it worked out well for me. But in fairness to Rosie at Corstorphine AG, she was spot on and knew her stuff.

The only items I'll buy from American golf are tees and balls.

Some of the assistants are ok but its usually the ones with limited knowledge who are all over you as soon as you walk through the door.

There's two at my local AG that form some kind of pincer movement on you, they wait until you're at the far end of the store then move in, making sure you've no escape route. Then harrass you into buying the first thing you've decided to look at. They don't care what it is or if its of any use to you, they just presume you want it because you've decided to pick it up.

You'd think they'd give it up after a while, but its the same crap sales pitch every time.

AG can be a bit hit and miss in my opinion.
I went looking for some new clubs a few months back and originally looked at some burner 2.
They were a bit too long for me but the fella was so desperate to sell them to me there and then he told me to just grip down and I’ll be ok. Then again I went back on another occasion and the guy dealing with me couldn’t of been more helpful (same branch). He brought almost every model out on the range for me to try till I found what I felt best for me. (which happened to be callaway razr x) In the end I brought them from my local pro shop for 100 quid cheaper.. with fitting.

I'm a fan of AG.

They always look after me and know me well enough not to stick a Nicklaus club in my hand.

I was deeply surprised by my swing speed (ooh, about a month or so ago) as it was reading 90-92 mph.

Two days later, I went to a bridgestone ball fitting and got up to a creditable 94.3 mph.

Neither of these is correct....of that I'm sure.

However, I think so much comes down to what you know about your swing and game before you even set foot in the bay.

Personally, when it comes to clubs and shafts, i.m.o. there's nothing wrong with AG.

If I was getting C/F for a set of irons, I'd be wanting to hit the ball at a range using a strike board.

Getting it done by a pro or going direct to a brand fitting center is more accurate on past experience. That said AG staff are usually reliable and know what they're talking about.

the one in WARRINGTON has the latest fitting equipment for their outside range, this consists of the shop assistant bringing 4 clubs out,one you asked about, one he wishes to sell you and 2 others armed with half a bucket of balls you then proceed to lash out with the one you want and being a bit stiff the ball doesn't fly, this is greeted with an uncanny sound from the test equipment that is like a "tut-tut-tut" you proceed to hit the other 2 clubs that will never suit your game in a million years "mmmm tut-tut" goes the state of the art fitting gear,"try this one,its a little more expensive but will look great sticking from your bag" 2 balls later and of no noticeable difference to the others "WOW GREAT SHOT!!! what h/c did you say you were, that was awesome" chirped the fitting machine,"i can do a special price on those if you buy them to-day"

my pro is based at a range with an AG attached (he is totally seperate from them). He does fitting seperate from them also so when I have the driver swing sorted he is going to get me hitting balls on the range & with a launch monitor - best of both worlds as AG may do me a deal then afterwards :)

I wouldnt use them solely though as too many stories here that would leave me wondering if it was right afterwards!
