Well Gar......
Iv read most of the thread with some amusement and some amazement....
I pretty much can sympathize with your situation as its very similar to the road i have chosen.....Like you i was off 21.....Messing about with a few things grip posture, the usual culprits i found that i could pretty much hit the ball fairly well after a given time and the handicap started to drop....I got down to 16 and began messing about again with a few things.....
I got great advice from Bob and used it for a while when off 16 and to be honest if i had the patience at the time to stay with what he saw in my swing and what he wanted me to do i would be in singles now...
Suffice to say i dabbled with S&T then through James......For the most part i began hitting the ball a little better again as it was stopping me from swaying in my swing.....
It got to the point where i was very mechanical looking on every shot......Anyway....I was really getting sick of missing shots to both sides of the course......I still had that out to in swing causing all manner of poor shots.
The problem for mid handicappers and high handicappers is that most swing with an out to in swing...... If someone wanted to try S&T from those handicaps in my opinion they should fix their swing plane first and foremost.....
Some people play better while moving off the ball and rolling their ankles and some dont....Im one of those that need to use their feet in the swing...It helps with my Tempo....
So before christmas i went the lessons route as like you i could play like a 7 some weekends and play like i was off 21 the next.....I was frustrated with how my game was going......
I have to say that iv not regretted it one bit.......Everything that iv learned has totally transformed the way i was hitting the ball....
I now turn behind the ball better and pick it cleaner off the grass...And im now hitting a consistent draw....My bad shot is a push and iv taken the left side of the course pretty much out of play altogether.....
My dispersion has narrowed to only a few yards and im much more confident standing over the ball knowing where i can start it......
Bob has given me some great extra tips also over the last few months which has helped no end....It hasnt been easy..And there's still a ways to go but i cant wait for the season to kick off.....He has pretty much had the same opinions that my Pro has told me.....
The only piece of advice that i can give you is that when you arrive for your first lesson just say to your Pro what you want your handicap to drop to and that your an open book.....Do what you feel necessary with me.....
Whatever he needs to change...Let him...If he says get behind the ball a little more do...If he wants you to swing down the line ...do......If he changes the backswing so that the club stays outside the target line longer ...Let him do it...They all have some influence..
My Pro started with my swing plane which was out to in....Once i mastered that he has pushed me and pushed me every week....He said as long as im making progress he'll keep pushing for more... Im giddy at the thought of some good weather and proper conditions coming back in to play.....
I wish you all the best on your voyage but i think you definitely are making the right decision...
Good luck Pal.
