I cant believe Alan Shearer, on mach of the day, backed Darren Bent after diving before the goal keeper even touched him. Bent was clearly going to ground without any contact. Not a word that Bent should have tried to ride the tackle. No, because the way the goal keeper came out it deserved a penalty going by Shearer. Steve Bruce said the goal keeper should have been sent off……..for what, forcing Bent to fake a penalty.

How outrageous is this.

Harvey, thi is the reason I stopped going to watch football. I had a season ticket at Fir Park for 9 years and decided that if cheating was acceptable then I wouldn't encourage it by helping pay their wages.

Why is it in every other walk of life the conman is the bad guy but in footy if they con the ref its HIM thats wrong.

I had a season ticket for Rangers,my last game was against paok Salonika,(1998 i think) one of Advocatts first european matches, the money that was being paid to average players, the lack of ability, and the cheating were all the reasons behind my decision to give up my season ticket.

Still go to every scotland home game though, must be the masochist in me.

Give it time, it will soon end up with the ref making the square sign, as they do in Rugby, where another tv ref will review the incident, make the call on any decisions the on field ref has any doubts over.

Might slow the game up but so be it, if it means cheats getting red cards it's maybe a good thing.

The British game used to be above the southern european and south american game with regard to cheating but the huge influx of foreign players to British football changed that unfortunately.

I think you have to accept that the Ref has to make a decision on what he and his assisiants see.

It is a fast flowing game and these things happen in a blink of an eye, much depends on which angle you see things from.

and in the live match, at the time, it looked like a penalty.

But the replays showed what really happened, Bent was already diving before any contact was made.

You will continue to get these problems until the powers that be catch up with other major sports like cricket and rugger and have a 4th ref with access to instant playback from multiple angles.

The sooner the better

I note also that Wycombe actually managed to score 4 goals yeaterday. OK they also let in 4 too,

What do you expect from Shearer - he was a Striker and they all stay together just like the defenders and the 'keepers.
I saw it on SSNews and its a joke.

Rapidly coming to the conclusion that sport=cheating. You can't get away from it anywhere. Footy, Rugby, F1, Cycling, Athletics, etc etc etc

Might take up watching tiddlywinks - until some tart starts cheating in that too..

It happens all the time the pros call it anticipating contact but I would call it cheating or diving, the reason Shearer agreed with it is he used to do it.

Here is Rooney doing the same thing he is on the ground before there is any contact --

What gets me, years ago players would jump that.....not now. Notice the defender done it no problem.

I havent seen the Bent 'penalty', but the Rooney incident, even looking at it in slow motion would be a penalty 9times out of 10. The reason, he rounds the ball past the keeper and the keeper nails him! simple...

But are any of them being villified as much as Eduardo was a couple of months back? .......... I don't think so. I'll be the first to admit that Eduardo's penalty was tame, but the press and just about everyone else went to town on him in a big big way - everyone screaming for him to be banned etc. Haven't seen that happening for Bent or Ngog........

Tame?? Tame??!!! :D

There was no contact and he went down like he'd been shot and to top it off he got away with it!! Tame...give me a break and clear ya red and white eyes oot!

A week later McGeady went down like a bag of turd in a league match and got red carded and rightfully so,these cheats should be hounded out IMO.

I agree that it will be given most times its just the fact that he is going down before there is contact, its just what Eduardo did but the keeper pulled out and made him look silly

I think it has become one of the hot subjects for both referees and panellists. Referees are trying to be so careful now they are under ever more scrutiny not only in the media but by their own association and are too aware that a poor decision will see them "rested" and doing Torquay v Aldershot the following week. As a result I happen to think unless the keeper makes the player look daft as in the Eduardo case then they will probably give it 8/10 times and hope that there is enough of an element of doubt to get away with it.

Its not how the game should be handled but with so much riding on every game and their decisions scrutinised to the nth degree I can understand it. It people like Eduardo, McGeady, Rooney, Drogba, Torres and even Andy Johnson from my own team that look to con the referee that takes away any remaining chance of a decision being based 100% on what the referee saw and is now seemingly based on what he thought he saw i.e. the direction of the ball after contact.

It will only get worse as the kids are already doing it. I was watching a kids game while stuck in traffic on Sunday and saw little Johnny through on goal. He tried to take it around the keeper but his touch was too heavy and so he made sure he caught the keepers hands and went down to get the penalty. I could see from forty yards away he dived but the ref bought it

Do you see where shrek hits the ball...he was never going to get it, just make sure you hit it anywhere before the keeper can get it. Job done, top cheat.

As stated previously, he hits the ball past the keeper and keeper nails him... Defo 9/10 times a penalty... There is no denying the keeper takes 'shrek' out of the game in the penalty box... penalty!
