AI, should we be developing it?

Listening to 5 Live this morning, first thing and the subject of AI came up. I never realised how much energy it needs. It was said, the US's target of what AI it wants will need 93 gigawatts of energy, which as was said 1 nuculear power station for 1 gigawatt. So 93 new nuclear power stations would be required, int he USA alone.
So is AI an animal we really want, need or want top let out the bottle?

I think it's one where the genie is out of the bottle so it's a case of join in or miss out. China will not let energy stop them, do you leave the market just to them? Whether I care or not, other countries won't sit back and let that happen.

It's a significant problem, definitely one that hasn't been thought through. Oops

93 gwatts, but how much energy will it save?

Industry, business, will not waste a huge amount of money, time & energy on something that isn’t efficient. There will be mistakes but, equally, I would take scaremongering with a pinch of salt.

It's already in use in education and the public sector in which I currently work. The results of AI's involvements that I have seen are sketchy at best, alarmingly dangerous at worst.
As LT says, the genie is out of the bottle but, FFS, more testing and human verification please.

I do wonder how much practical use it will actually be? Will it help or will it just be a novelty that doesn't bring any real benefits? Lots of promises and predictions at this point, not overly sure what it is doing, other than providing the lazier students out there with cheat answers.

Or no jobs for the lower/medium end.

This is the best use of AI. A picture of one of our club teams ‘posing’ for the team Christmas card. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I saw some adverts for Googles new AI thingy

apparantly I can make a picture of a Dachshund in various different historical styles of dress and location, or make it into a sports star

I never knew I needed that ability ....and apparantly, I still dont

Or no jobs for the lower/medium end.
This is inevitable, but it has been human nature since the agricultural revolution to make people redundant and not just at the lower/medium end, accountants, bookkeepers, paralegals, legal assistants even Doctors will be out of a job too…

Maybe the AI can work out the secret of Nuclear fission and resolve the power issue? Or will it just use the excess humans as batteries!🤔

It will keep being developed until it becomes sentient, realises the world's problems are caused by humans and take action.... 💥

... at least that's what the sci fi books have been telling me 😉😁

There's been celebrating recently that renewable energy has overtaken coal based recently, but somewhat tempered by the additional energy use for these 'AI farms'.

Aa said, is out of the bottle - much of business world seems obsessed with it. Can likely assume some militaries are ahead.

Last cruise I was on, met a guy who is into AI and the development of it. He raved about it.A lot of it went straight over my head. Basically because I was not interested one bit. He was saying how everyone will have a Personal AI assistant. You can ask it to look for an holiday to your specifications and price and when you finish work that day. Your AI assistant wil have booked it for you..
Yup I was still not interested.

Just think of all those farriers that lost their jobs…

Benz’s first car had a top speed of 10mph(?).

Progress didn’t see a 100mph sports car for a wee while. That’s progress.

Reminds me of the Henry Ford attributed quote “if I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses”.

AI has already come on leaps and bounds in recent years. It’s already in practical application in many industries, Aviation uses it to plot alternate routes and is used in training.
At base level many employers are using to recruit people, in its current state it’s still only as good as the data I put into it by humans.

But as has been previously said the cat is well out of the bag. The issue now is to ensure it’s developed in a way to help people be better at what they do not replace their roles in the work place entirely. As for the energy issue I have no answers because that’s something that could well change the more they understand and improve it.

It’s a long way off though from being SkyNet 🤣

I recently watched part of a news feature about the amount of info storage and the computer banks.
They were showing one company that has built their facility next a cold lake so they could reduce power needs for cooling by drawing in water from the lake (obviously it goes back in to the lake) to use in cooling water pipes with solar providing a lot of the power needs.

This is a reason that Scandinavian countries are leaders in the data storage world. It is also why ones in the UK are often near to the coast. Cooling is a big issue for them. (this is a market we supply into)

Maybe we could save resources by making "Made with AI" videos on social media illegal. Has there ever been such a pointless waste of time and space? Really annoys me. Saw one the other day that was a car towing a large boat along a narrow round on the side of a mountain - might've been interesting if it was real, but it was made by AI. What's the point??

But did you watch it for longer than a few seconds. If you did you’ve just inadvertently proven the point to it. Someone made it knowing it would click bait others into watching it, each view that got improved their algorithm and thus adding a few pence to their digital bank account, each view adds up and money is made. That in itself in the singular point to what you watched.
