Tonight my cousin (a year younger) and myself went out to play a round for the junior summer aggregate at my club. The rules of this aggregate - 10 rounds, 2 best count (proper competition rules).

Well my cousin started very well and then deteriated a bit towards the 7th hole. I was playing consistently well.
Here's where the trouble started. My cousin hooked his tee shot on the par 3 7th far into the trees. We went to look for it and I found his ball, in a horrible situation. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 shots... in a rage he then (to my horror) picked up his ball.

He then, on the next tee, announced that he was going to walk in after 10 holes. After 10 holes I was 7 under my handicap, but unfortunately couldn't continue and possibly put in a great score as my marker was walking up the hill in a firm mood.

At the clubhouse I informed him that I thought his behaviour had been very selfish and I would not like to golf with him again until he sorted out his short temper (this isn't the first time he has lost his head on the course) I could see he was upset but I thought I had to let him know how I felt. Sorry about the rant but just wanted to know your feelings on the situation. Did I do right? What should I do now?

He should have stayed out and at least marked your card given how well you were played.

There is no need for this show of temper especially from a youngster.

Very poor. Even if he had jacked the comp in himself he had an obligation as your partner to mark your card especially if you were playing so well. I think you should avoid playing with him as you say until he can sort his temper out. I hope he doesn't play with any adult members at all as that sort of behaviour will lead to a lengthy ban or worse.

That's a bad break for you. Hopefully he will realise just how badly he has let you down on this.

Stick with it, find another partner and go and do it again.

Why didn’t he just take a penalty drop from behind the hazard because he is allowed two clubs length from the end of the hazard, be it 45* right or left or just take a unplayable ball and take the tee shot again at penalty? I would rather take my medicine than get further into trouble.

He shoulds like a narna, but then again he is only 14 so maybe time will tell if his attitude improves.

don't quite understand your thinking on the first part of this. Obviously with hindsight either a penalty drop or a return to the tee would have been a better option before trying the first shot out of the trees. But I can't see where your coming from with the "Why didn’t he just take a penalty drop from behind the hazard because he is allowed two clubs length from the end of the hazard, be it 45* right or left "

Say you are in a bush and there is no way to play the ball, the two club length starts from the edge of the bush not in the bush and just needs to be no nearer the hole, so for example you go to the middle of the back of the bush and do two clubs length but it can be at an angle just no nearer the hole from where the ball rested after the first shot. I was unaware of this and some chap who is a stickler for the rules advised me on it.
