As per the title is the other half's birthday on the 28 Th of March so I'm thinking a cottage in south of France for the easter break, ideally leave Thurs or Friday and come back on the bank holiday Monday. Found a site offering cottages for hire, but quite far apart so looking for some suggested areas.

She's 30, I'm 33 so ideally somewhere with a bit of night life, few nice places to eat, maybe a touch of shopping and even some wine tasting or other stuff to do, any ideas chaps?

Carcasonne. A walled town in the south of France, easyjet or Ryanair used to do flights to it.

It doesn't have great nightlife, but ticks all the other boxes, culture wise.

Look at Monaco. Fly to Niece, Easy jet. If you really want to spoil her get the hire helicopter to Monaco (around £75) it flys along the coast. The Hotels are not as expensive as London, meals are a bit stiff but you can find some goof ones, there is an Irish Pub that is good for beer and food. A few drinks sat at the Cafe De Paris in Monte Carlo watching the beautiful people walk by and a visit to the Casino, it's a great experience.

i second Barca

I will third it, fantastic city, it was the first time that we met, how can I forget, the moment that you stepped into the room you took my breath away, plus it has the beach for a bit of R&R.

And try and get a ticket for Barcelona at the Nou Camp whilst you are there, magnificent experience.

if you chose there or near there. let me know, my mum and dad live about an hour away. they have a guided motorbike tour business with B&B.. so can get you some free local advice!

If you are looking at other countries, i will trump Barca with Madrid. quite simply IMHO the best city in europe. if i was given the choice today on a city break, it would be Madrid no question. it has everything, culture, bars, nightlife, history, weather, the Bernabeu! what more could you ask for? if you do go, go for a meal here: http://www.teatriz.com/

Seconded, Madrid is better than Barcelona IMHO.

Prague is a lovely city, full of culture. Stay a few tram/metro stops away from the centre and your sure to have a great time. traveling round is cheap. I got a transfer from the hotel to the airport for £1.50 using the bus and trains, took about 30 minutes longer but saved about £30.

Barcelona? Nothing to see unless you're into bull fighting. Monaco sounds like a crack! Wouldn't mind slipping the missus into a chopper instead of the other way round :p

Bordeaux gets my vote. It's been several years since I've been (about 20 to be honest) but I loved it when I was last there.
If you want to take her somewhere a little different then have a look at Andorra. Not to sure about how warm it would be at the end of March but being in the mountains is stunningly beautifull.
