I know Benross were doing an offer on the Velo-CT driver, you get a free putter with it (saw this a week after i bought one of the drivers!!!).

it's a v good driver and the putter is meant to be pretty good too.

I did the same thing expcet I bought the putter as well. You could do a lot worse than getting a Benross VeloCT driver and Pure Red putter for £100.00. Think they are giving away hybrids with irons as well.

I work in Stevenage, live on the A1 corridor - Cambs/Beds border.

there is ag at Biggleswade, dg at Edgeware and Hemingford Abbots (further North) and Nevada Bobs at Borehamwood, Watford and Harlow

tbh, I don't know of any ranges that have gear for sale

Slightly miffed is an understatement. I went to my old club pro to keep my business local and I still suspect that he might have known about the promotion coming up at the time. Certainly retailers know about these promotions some time before they are released to general public. Certainly am now less likely to be going back any time soon.

Thankfully you have decided not to get a package set.

I was in the same position as you last September, sadly I didn't have the advice this place gives and bought a Maxfli set from JJB for £200.

The irons are OK for a beginner but the woods are awful.

I have just replaced the driver, bought a 60* wedge and cannot wait until I can affor a new wood.

I am struggeling to break 100 at teh minute but know I have a good game in me. Just don't think it will come out with the clubs I have.

A very good friend of mine went to DG and got a Wilson starters set for 250 pounds. He got the lie angles done and has a very good set now for a really good price.

If you want my advice go and get a founders club or RAM set.

They seem a very good bargain, and if you can get the lie angles done you will probably have a set of wich you can always change the woods and putters for better ones.

But... you can always get a couple of clubs instead of a full package set...

In the bag:
Ram fx-ti driver 10
Nike t-40 15
Ram fx9 hybrid 18
Founders club hybrid 21
Macgregor m685 forged 4-PW
Vintage petron impala SW
Mizuno Osaka stand bag
Callaway HX Hot bite or Titleist Pro V1x

My other half had a package set of bag, irons woods hybrids & putter..

The irons wern't bad, not baddly balanced, though tbh were in the end too heavey for her even in a ladies set. The Woods & Hybrids were okay, though nothing special...

The putter was the first thing essentially binned & sits in the spare bedroom..

We ended up getting a couple of decent woods & a decent driver for her. The hybrids in the set were good enough for her needs at the time, nothing special but seem to work for her. The bag was not overly practical, but was at least hard wearing & looked nice for one of the budget type all in one sets.

She's recently bought herself some new decent Cleveland CG Pink irons, which work much better for her & combined with the Benross woods & 3 iron Hybrid, the Wilson Putter specially fitted for her, the Yonex ladies driver found brand new at just the right price as it was the end of a line model.

I'd say either look for good quality second hand or look for last years model reduced in price brand new.

Try out irons in the shop, you don't need to spend shedloads, but buying previous years model at low prices means good quality at budget money.

The same goes for putter, driver & all the rest, try them & put together your own set, then see if the shop will move on the price, or throw in some goodies, especially if you are choosing shoes & other goodies at the same time. Choose a bag you like Or that comes well recommended.

My recommendation would be MD putter & wedges (NV Drew is best)

There are some great deals to be had on irons right now.

Initially I'd say if you can resist the temptation leave the driver for later, but do a deal on some nice fairway woods. Having said this there are some nice budget drivers to be found, having said this again last years brand new premium drivers can be found for similar prices to budget brand new drivers.

Oh & take a knowledgable friend with you never hurts having another pair of eyes & brain with you as well as yours & the sales assistant/golf pro.

I'd endorse this! My set of irons cost me £99 new (thank you DG), original price when first released £499. There are bargains out there.

Not sure that someone who is considering a budget set of clubs should be looking at drivers. These are nothing but trouble for beginners. A decent hybrid would be fine off the tee and the fairway. Much easier to hit, much cheaper to buy, fewer lost balls.
