Hello,

Over the last couple of months I've been going down to my local driving range with a friend to hit some balls. I've never played before but I am loving the driving range and want to carry on to a full set of clubs and to play on a course.
I want to get some lessons and a good set of clubs, but I am unsure what to get. I am going towards getting a second hand set of clubs to practice and get used to the game of golf with.

Is there any good websites or stores that sell second hand clubs? My other half is on maternity leave at the moment so I am also on a bit of a budget.

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Welcome along. Where are you based. There are some good online second hand retailers like Golfbidder and Affordable Golf but why not speak to the pros at the range you use and see if they have any second hand sets you could try and buy or ask them what they recommend.

I'm based in Leicester.
I didnt think about asking them, I'll ask at reception who they are and see if I can talk to them.
I'll also check out them websites too. Thanks.

One advantage of Golfbidder (aside from the massive choice) is they offer a 7 day return policy so you can try and return them if they aren't for you. Massive selection so you need to get advice on what suits best

Another vote for golfbidder, reasonably priced and they also make sure all the clubs they sell are genuine and in good working order. Only downside is not being able to try them first!

see a local professional and get a basic grip, stance, posture lesson. Ask what type of clubs would best suit and then head to Golfbidder to see what they have.

Whilst I’m a fan of getting properly fitted by a specialist pro at your stage it might be worth finding an American golf and seeing what 2nd hand sets they have. Golf bidder is great if you know what your looking for but you’ll be able to try a range of stock sets at American golf.

Otherwise. I always found Wilson staff sets very forgiving.

Good luck

Thanks, I have seen a second hand set of Wilson irons on gumtree that seem a good option.
I have looked on golfbidder but theres a lot on there and I don't know what's best for me.
I'll have a look on american golf website if they have one.

The websites don’t stock the second hand clubs. I’m afraid it’s pop down and see what they have.

For Wilson staff. D range is their distance range for new players. I find the club heads a bit heavy as designed to get you back to the ball. The C range is for control for the mid range players. A slightly better weighted club in my opinion and has more feel to it. Avoid anything else as likely for low handicappers. American golf stock Wilson so you could give each range a try as new and by in that range second hand online.

I use Mizuno snow and they’re lovely but they are properly fitted and it was amazing what a difference a shaft made to their performance so maybe avoid for now. For woods you can’t really go wrong with the Taylor made M2 range. A few years old so cheaper. Make sure you go for regular shafts. A 3 hybrid is only 1° different to a 5 wood so I chose a hybrid for a bit more versatility. The M2 3 wood high loft is very forgiving.
When buying irons see what wedges are there. You could do with getting a pitch, gap and sand in the set and maybe these would be the first thing you upgrade later due to wear. I wouldn’t replace one wedge at a time as it will be massively inconsistent to the rest of your wedges.

Would the WILSON 1200-CG golf set be any good. I know someone who is selling it for £150 but I could get them down cheaper. They say they have only used it twice and the pictures they have sent seem brand new.
Would it be good for a new starter like myself?

i bought a cheap full set plus bag for £30 from ebay it wasnt great, and i replaced them 6 months later but id 100% say start with ebay. You should be able to get a really cheap set to get started playing.

I paid £60 for a full set of irons 4-pw from AG second hand that instill use now 12-18 months later.

Added a putter for £50 and a bag for £40.

So £150 to get me out on the course.

Added a driver, 3w, 3h, and SW later on

Ive just been patching together a set as i go over the last few months. Started off with a cheap donney bag, irons and a putter passed down from my brother, bought a cheap hybrid for £15 (slazenger v300) out sports direct. Got a 3 & 5 wood off facebook market place for £20 (ping G2), got a wilson carry bag in the american golf sale for £70. Was eyeing up new irons then my pw broke, took it as a sign and bought callaway xr 5-pw for £199 used out american golf. Will upgrade the hybrid in due course and that will be me set for a few years.
