I'm wondering what people consider as appropriate golfing shorts. I played today to the point of total discomfort.

Kev (golfboysatty) had a pair of Nike golf sorts, some had cargo shorts and one guy even had 3/4 cargo pants. I'm wondering if a set of smart craghopper zip-offs would be ok? They only have one side pocket and besides that look like walking trousers which are breathable and light

really depends on the rules of where you are playing and how strictly they are enforced. by the sounds of it anything goes where you ar so go for it. personally tend to feel comfy if a bit smarter so have a few pairs of ashworth and ping shorts that fit into the tailored category

m and m direct have the ping supra ones for £20 which are nice and lightweight

cargo shorts are fine by me,some people need to concentrate more on thier own game rather than what someone is wearing,it's that atittude which gives golf a bad name.keep it smart cargo shorts polo and dare i say it short socks!!!!! and you can't go wrong.

I've just ordered a couple pairs of these...

I'm afraid I do not agree, sorry. For me only proper golf shorts should be worn unless you play a muni then wear whatever you like.

In my opinion there are no acceptable golfing shorts, long trousers only. And this should be made law once you reach the age of 40.

And while I've got my "Mr Stuffy" hat on, I was pleased to see Luke Donald wearing proper golf shoes at the PGA today.

Whilst I used to agree, I was wearing lightweight white trousers today and still the cracker catchers were like the doors of hell.

Not blaming this for a bad round but anything for a comfortable life

While I have no objection to others wearing cargo shorts/cargo 'nearly longs' (anywhere!), I'd still wear 'proper' golfing gear - as I'd expect you to as well.

And mine are normally un-ironed/slightly unclean, so I'm not the most sartorially elegant of golfers!

i played friday sporting a pair of ''oakley take'' golf shorts. the starter and another memeber said ''you cant play in them, they're not golf shorts''
i then proceeded to show them the 'oakley golf apparell' logo and they still wasn't satisfied. they are karky green, above the knee with ONE cargo pocket on the side. mean while some mooron with bright orange and yellow shorts with flowers all over them didn't get a mention! why i asked the starter. ''because he baught the shorts from here'' (they also had a pocket on the side)

i know at least 5 people that wont take up golf because of this stupid regemented dress code golf has. you can wear rupert the bear trousers but god forbid if you have black socks

Why is it that women can wear pedal pushers and ankle [less] socks but men can't wear cargo shorts.

Dress code rules have to move with the times
The trouble is that most clubs dress code rules are enforced by former brylcreamed Teddy Boys.

I think there must be 10000 posts on dress codes, they always end the same way, younger golfers wanting relaxed dress codes and older ones wanting to keep the status quo. I think the answer is that once one generation passes the next one slackens the rules in line with their own feelings. At the moment we have certain dress codes that some younger golfers do not want to fall in line with. Once they are committee members things will change, until then why not just get on with what we have?

Simply because its attitudes like yours that keep youngsters from progressing within golf clubs. Knuckle dragging dress codes are pathetic. Thank God for Tiger Woods and his mock neck tops, that smashed down a good few doors in the dress sense attitudes!

There are but a handful of grown Men who have tha ability to carry-off a pair of shorts in Public.
Alas, neither Myself nor the majority of people I know fall into this category.
And as for shorts on the Golf Course - behave...........

Cargo shorts aren't allowed at my club. End of. Those is the rules and if you don't want to conform don't join

The rules are on the website http://www.royalascotgolfclub.co.uk/visitors-and-societies/dress-code.html so it isn't as though you don't know. Personally I don't like playing in shorts but have no issues with my partners doing so although 95% of the male members can't carry the look off and make me laugh to myself when I see them dressed like that.
