about lessons

I am a big fan of lessons and I disagree that a pro is a quick fix. My swing is unique and will never be perfect but it can be consistent, certainly more so now than it was when I started with my pro in December 2011. We are still working on things and peeling away the layers.

If you are going to embark on lessons and I would rather go and see a pro than get bogged down in self diagnosis and trying to do it myself, go and have a chat with the pro you are going to use. Discuss what you want to achieve and ask him how he'd plan to get you to your end point. If you are happy, then go for it. If you start and you find the information doesn't stick or you don't like the way you are taught, go somewhere else. It is about finding someone to help your game.

As I have said everyones different.
However in your case Homer it isn't a quick fix.
The trouble is you do get bogged down, your posts tells us that.
Surely though if you are having all these lessons they should be working.
Obviously there not due to your handicap rising.
Mine has come down considerably and I have not had a proper lesson.
With the internet I can pick one thing and go and work on it,so im not bogged
down with thoughts.
As I said im not knocking lessons if they work[results are achieved].
Advocating lessons for everything is getting a little bit boring to be honest.
There are plenty of great instructions on the net,and in golf monthly that if carried out
properly and proficient can certainly help.

Handicap may have gone up 1 shot this year (not sweating on that) but the quality of the ball striking is much improved. Just having one killer hole in comps that kills any chance to make the buffer or get cut.

Keep plugging away mate im sure you will be back to singles soon.
Chipping and putting will do it.
Sounds like your happy with the new bats.

both my brother and nephew have gone for lessons this season. what worries me is that two separate pro's did not attempt to change their grip.

my brother doesn't really want to change his grip as he has been playing so long. a little silly yes.

my nephew really does need to change his grip. he hooks everything massively. his grip is super strong. I cant get my head around the fact it has never been mentioned by the pro.

apparently my nephew was there tonight and couldn't hit anything. the pro was talking about hip movement and other things which in reality was too much for him to take in as he couldn't really explain it to me.

the only thing he can do right atm is chipping. the thing I taught him last week when he came to visit. it took me about 20minutes.

However, a day or two later, I try it again and I struggle to get into the positions that he had explained and my swing feels tricky and
does your pro give you any notes to take away with you ?

One of the guys I used to go to have you a sheet with the salient points on it from that lesson, often explained with matchstick golfers. Now I make some notes my self as soon as I get home I make some notes with some doodles. I find this helpful to remind myself a few days later, and is also good to look back on

I'd say for most amateur golfers lessons are a quick fix, good for when starting out & the odd lesson to sort out any problems.
How often do you have lessons Homer?

I didn't go to a pro for quite a while and tried fixing my own game. It works to a point but to be honest I wish I had just gone to a pro in the first place right off the bat when I started playing.

The reason I say that is because, for me at least, when starting out you pick up bad habbits that are very hard to correct later on down the line when they become second nature. Someone might say 'I've found my swing now so I just need a pro to tweak it for me' but to be honest, with the benefit of hindsight, I would rather a pro taught me a flawless swing that became second nature first than have to conciously alter my swing and try to force it to become natural at a later date.

The hardest people to teach are the self taught who have reached a standard and cant improve any further. So as a last resort, they have a lesson. :ooo:
The easiest to teach are COMPLETE beginners

Old dog etc

I didn't go to a pro for my first year in golf, I just copied and emulated what I saw the good guys doing, worked to a point but when I was in trouble I didn't know how to rectify it effectively, see a pro! There's a reason even the Pro's see Pro's:smirk:

What are the most fun?

Question for Bob-What would a teaching pro do if a young Jim Furyk turned up for a lesson?
I reckon a few tried to change his swing in the early days.

Went to my pro as a complete beginner last year for group ladies lessons. Still having them now as they're great value for money, only 3 of us in the group plus if my golf is going to pot on the course he can get me back on track in under five minutes. He also works with what we can do as individuals. He also reminds me that I expect too much from myself and need to wait for consistency on the course to come.

I try and help the pupil achieve what they want with the smallest disruption to the natural swing.

If a young Furyk came to me and was hitting the ball like he does, why would I change it?

Everything is based around the ball flight...... how you hit it and where you hit it.
If the player isn't happy with one or the other, it's the pros job to identify the problem, explain to the pupil the problem and work out how to fix the problem.
This is where video comes in really handy.
If the player can see the fault and understand the cure, then he/she will be more inclined to practice and make the change to improve their ball flight.

I'm with you on the video. I was shocked when I seen a picture of my stance on the video - dead straight legs, bent from the waist and bent way further over than I imagined.

Starting to see some good results since I worked on trying to stand up straighter. Ball striking has definitely improved and is getting more and more consistent, big slice with the driver all but eliminated etc.

Due to go back at the beginning of September for another lesson and it will be interesting to see what I look like on the video now as he is able to show me what I looked like when I started and then how I've changed each lesson. It is very interesting to watch the changes over time, I find it very useful.

I wish he would stop putting Justin Rose on the other screen as an example tho!! :D
