St Georges Hill was in magnificent condition yesterday with greens like snooker tables and everything else on the course and in the clubhouse in excellent order.
I played in a reasonably big society day there with 60 players and everyone had a great time. My round was interesting, to me it was anyway, so apologies if this bores you rigid... Every drive on the front 9 put me in trouble and I was really struggling to make pars, ending the front 9 at 10+ having recorded two 7's on my card! Three glasses of champagne at the halfway hut, courtesy of the new society captain, revitalised me and I also left my driver there so that I would not be tempted to use it again.
From the 10th, armed with a 3 wood, I went par, birdie, birdie, birdie, par, par, par, birdie, bogey to finish with a 77 gross. Somewhat surprisingly, this was good enough to win the lowest gross and past captains prizes which came with accompanying bottles of Bollinger!
Just shows it is worth battling on even when you're having a bad day on the course.
Lunch was as fantastic as ever and made even better by sitting next to Peter Alliss (past president of our society) who was in superb form for a couple of hours and I had a good chat with him about the BBC and golf, the best courses of Yorkshire and reminiscing about the superstars of my youth including his great friend, Lee Trevino.
All in all, a fantastic day out, topped off by the fact that the guest beer at the club is currently Hogs Back TEA - my favourite!
Get to St Georges Hill soon if you want a brilliant day out - great course, awesome food and a special occasion every time you visit.
Just don't take a Callaway Razr Tour driver with you - they seem to be faulty!
