A round of two halves and a nice lunch at St Georges Hill yesterday

St Georges Hill was in magnificent condition yesterday with greens like snooker tables and everything else on the course and in the clubhouse in excellent order.

I played in a reasonably big society day there with 60 players and everyone had a great time. My round was interesting, to me it was anyway, so apologies if this bores you rigid... Every drive on the front 9 put me in trouble and I was really struggling to make pars, ending the front 9 at 10+ having recorded two 7's on my card! Three glasses of champagne at the halfway hut, courtesy of the new society captain, revitalised me and I also left my driver there so that I would not be tempted to use it again.

From the 10th, armed with a 3 wood, I went par, birdie, birdie, birdie, par, par, par, birdie, bogey to finish with a 77 gross. Somewhat surprisingly, this was good enough to win the lowest gross and past captains prizes which came with accompanying bottles of Bollinger!

Just shows it is worth battling on even when you're having a bad day on the course.

Lunch was as fantastic as ever and made even better by sitting next to Peter Alliss (past president of our society) who was in superb form for a couple of hours and I had a good chat with him about the BBC and golf, the best courses of Yorkshire and reminiscing about the superstars of my youth including his great friend, Lee Trevino.

All in all, a fantastic day out, topped off by the fact that the guest beer at the club is currently Hogs Back TEA - my favourite!

Get to St Georges Hill soon if you want a brilliant day out - great course, awesome food and a special occasion every time you visit.

Just don't take a Callaway Razr Tour driver with you - they seem to be faulty!

Good back nine shooting Dave. The course has obviously dried out nicely, as when I played at the end of February it was very wet. Shows what a bit of good weather can do. Have they filled in the reservoir yet. When we played the silver lining was so bright you needed shades. The new green on the first looks odd. Assume it is a winter green ?

I love St Georges Hill, but must admit I now prefer The Berkshire Red. Fortunately I am lucky enough to play both every year.

SOunds like another fine day out. St Georges is a fantastic venue and well worth playing if you get the chance. Good shooting too especially with the fizz inside you. Maybe that's the secret. Bollinger on the 1st?

I didn't even notice a new green on the first?! Must be for Winter as it wasn't in play. Yes the course was dry underfoot and in just about perfect condition.

The new reservoir - I couldn't believe the size of it and no, not filled yet and yes, the glare off it was dazzling.

The Berkshire is great and yes, the Red is fantastic. But for me, SGH just shades it. I think it is the overall experience of being somewhere special that clinches it rather than the specifics of the course. Additionally, you always seem to prefer the courses where you have had success and I think I have won more prizes here than at any other of our society courses. Plus there is the 13th hole (birdied it for the first time in over 20 attempts this week!) Surely one of the best inland par 4's in the UK? Certainly in my top 3 along with the 10th on Sunningdale Old and the 14th at Hankley Common.

Next golf for me is Hankley on the 31st March. No rest for the wicked... :)
