Dear fellow golfers,

I recently got asked to play in a golf society day, One which i've played at before.

I was looking forward to having another go at ripping up the course.

After having bad weather and stopping for half an hour after 9 holes, 18 holes later i found myself with an impressive 44 points off a handicap of 17.

The day ended and to my delight i found myself the winner.

As the results were read out the usual banter was to be heard in the back ground. I looked on to see what was to be won 'and now we all know that the prices on these society days aren't the greatest' but its the taking part that counts or is it?

I found myself clucthing two bottles of wine, the same too bottles of wine the nearest to the pin , the longest drive and to my belief the worst player had won!How could this be, the same as the worse player!?

Now i know its the taking part that counts but if your walking down the 18th with a good score. What would you be thinking of? What a lovely day of golf ive had or what that top prize would be......

I would be thinking "what a lovely day's golf I've had".

If anyone in our society had scored 44 points off 17  then they would be playing off 11 the next time - something to look forward to. Cut of 2 shots for winning and another shot for every 2 points over 36.

Our company society is quite a few years old and has had many trophies (14) either donated or inherited as company societies merged.
Winners get the trophy to hold for one year and a small keeper, and a £10 voucher (which can be used against a future event) in addition to a sleeve of balls which all winners/runners up/nearest the pin get. 2nd gets a £5 voucher plus the balls.
The prize isn't the thing, it's the bragging rights!

I think two bottles of wine is a nice prize.

It is nice to win, but the actual prize is irrelevant really. It is, as said above, about bragging rights.

So what if the worst score gets the same, why does that diminish your prize?

It's all about the glory!!

I played recently in a works event and and encouraged a guy who I work with who had never played golf in his life before to give it a bash. I lent him a set of clubs, took him for a few sessions at the the range and made sure that he went out in a group who would be supportive of his first time efforts. Needless to say he had the worst score of the day and came dead last, but he managed to chip one in from 60 yards out and had a fantastic day. Now he's hooked.

On the day, as it happened, I played out of my skin and romped home in first place and when it came to the presentation of the prizes. I stepped up to receive a tidy little package including a golf bag, rescue club, a dozen balls, polo shirt and cap. Easily £150 quids worth.......and that's when I received the best prize I've ever won in golf. The satisfaction of giving all that gear away to the first timer to encourage him to take the game up seriously in the hope that he grows to love it as much as I do. Priceless.

Unless there is a means of obtaining the prizes from "other" sources ie Contractors or Suppliers, then there is no point in a society spending big buck to provide big prizes. its all about the day out with your mates IMO.

Think yourself lucky, I ran a staff outing a few years back and put the good prizes (some very good whisky !) to the also rans that day as they never get good prizes for coming lower down the order.

When I first started to play in my Society 6-7 years ago, twice I had the worst score, winning a sleeve of golf balls and best of all a set of kids plastic clubs and a plastic pull trolley, (a la Asda). My two grandaughters have had hours of fun playing with them. In fact this year on one of the days had the worst score again, and you've guessed it, another set of plastic clubs :o Now they have a set each :D

Golfmmad.
