I got a lesson yesterday morning and the instructor tried to turn my swing into a "man's swing." He got to grip so tight that my hands practically fell off. :D Most of his teachings were based on Hogan.
Did anybody ever get a lesson on having the "man's" swing? :D

Gripping it that tight goes against everything I've ever heard about the golf swing. Surely it can only create tension in the arms and make it impossible to turn and swing back and through properly. Sounds very odd. Is your pro advocating playing like this or just as a drill or as part of your lesson

Im very sure he was trying to get me to tense up my arms. I'd assume he is trying to get me to play like this as we finished off the lesson with him trying to make me swing like that.

Tensing up the arms goes against ALL golf teaching.

Every book I've read, video/dvd I've seen has always instructed to gently grip the club. Gripping too tightly causes tension in the hands, arms, in fact all the body.

Saying that, I think I do grip the clubs a bit tighter than the average golfer!

wow, that sounds a bit strange to me.Ive heared of being told to grip the club as tightly as you can for as long as you can then letting go and regripping and that should roughly be the firmness of grip you need. Do you think he meant that?

I grip the club quite firm, I don't strangle it until my hands turn white but it won't be slipping out of my grip in a hurry. I'm a believer that you should grip the club as hard as you feel comfortable with according to the shot you're playing. A soft chip then grip lightly, a thrash with a 7-iron trying to carry 160 over the front bunker then grip it as hard as you want. All that 'grip it like a toothpaste tube' stuff is lost on me.

Out of interest are you a female or a junior?

I'm a junior. The instructor was a former european tour player (robert j brown) and I'm very sure he meant a tight grip and he was trying to get me to the tense my arms a lot. I'd say my usual grip pressure would be slightly too tight
