Firstly, hi to everyone, I've been lurking around this forum for quite a while now but only just got around to regisering and posting. A little background - I started playing golf at 17, played for a couple of years until I was 19 and went to university and have just been getting back into it now at 26.

Secondly, I have a question that I hope you guys wouldn't mind throwing your 2 pence in on. I've got a pretty old Langert 5 wood that was given to me by dad when I first started playing and I always used to hit it pretty well and usually use to hit my second shot on long par 5's, but recently I've not been getting on with it. So I went down the range this evening to try and have a bit more practise with it and was still pretty unsuccesful. So for now I've decided to leave it in my bag - but what would you recommend as an alternative club I could use? What do you use as your second shot club on long par 5's and what club might I expect to carry a similar distance to a 5 wood?

Cheers! :)

Mono you might have one you could sell him :D.

Welcome to the forum though Allen, as you can see the banter is good. What's your handicap now and where do you play?

It is very old so could probably do with a new one :)

I don't have an official handicap. Been submitting scorecards to an online handicap calculator and am currently on 25 according to that. I've got a long way to go! I've been playing a couple of courses in North Wales, Darlands, a municipal course (but a reasonably decent one) and also played Padeswood a few times with a friend who is a member.

Could have a look at something like a Wilson Fybrid or Adams XTD which are somewhere in between a 5 wood and a hybrid

I guess it depends on your budget to some degree. I'm guessing that brand is either a very early metal five wood or an old fashioned wooden one. Either way I'm pretty certain you are not getting optimum distance and forgiveness.

There are plenty of clubs on offer. If you are looking for a new club on a budget, MD golf is a top brand at reasonable prices. Of the others, the TM burner is pretty good (if you can source and 08 model you'll get that pretty cheap). The Ping G10's are very forgiving. I like my Cleveland XLS. Other than that you may get an older model like the Ping G5 pretty cheap.

Welcome to the forum and let us know how the search goes.

Could only really be a 16 degree rescue, the rest will all be way too short.

I use my 5 wood on all sorts of holes, but surprisingly little on par 5s. Nearly always go for safety with a rescue or mid-iron and leave a full shot in.

Thanks for all the replies so far, I'll definately take a look at some of the clubs suggested. If I'm to buy a replacement, I'm not necessarily concerned about getting a budget model - maybe a mid-range / budget club. Homer you are correct, it is a very early metal club. I have had it nearly 10 years :)

I've never heard of your 5 wood, so it must be pretty old!

I play with a Callaway Steelhead plus 5 wood (2003) and it's a corker. The one before was an old Callaway Big Bertha (1991, according to Golfbidder). A good 5 wood is a must for me, but I'd rather play with these than anything else, SO good. Interestingly Golf Bidder are asking MORE for the 1991 club than I paid for the Steelhead from my range.

Monkeyallen, welcome to the forum, good to see another member from Chester.

You use Sandfields range?

I have just acquired a rescue, 24* to gap my 4 iron and 3 wood.

Have you been to Foregolf on Sealand road, they always have a selection of clubs you could try out.

You could even get a proper fitting for one, you pay £25 for the fitting but you get that back if you buy a club. SO the fiting is free and you will have the benefit of all the techno the pro spits out!

You played Old padeswood or P'wood and Buckley?

recently bought a TM R9 17* 4 wood. It's a bit pricy but was the best one I tried and can deffo reccomend the R9's obviously you can also get them in 5 and 3 wood (I just wanted a 4 wood)

they're simply awsome.

try a ping G5 5 wood, tremendous & easy to hit, plenty of them about , try usedping.co.uk, loads on there. its the first wood i have had any confidence in, i know i'm gonna hit it well every time. good luck fella.

No, not sure where that is tbh? I use the range at Sealand road - didn't realise they do club fitting so I'll make sure to enquire about that next time I'm there, thanks!

Old Padeswood, sorry didn't realise there were two courses so close with such similar names.

MA, Sealand road have a really good setup for custom fit, the bays at the far end (behind big steal shutters) are kitted out with all sorts.

Sandfield range is the other side of Chester, towards Mickle Trafford and Elton. Has a great little 9 holer at the back. (better than foregolfs wedge and putt)

Old Padeswood and Padeswood and Buckley are virtually the same club, they share boundry fences and are next door to each other on the car parks. Instead of turning right for old carpark you go straight on over little humpback bridge for P&B.

You played any others in Chester, I play out of Upton and was at Mollington last year!
