i played yesterday at Styrrup hall golf club, most notable for its 3rd hole at 712yds from the white tees

yes we were allowed to play from the whites by the pro

i played superb on the front 9 shooting an impressive 35, 3under gross which included 2 birdies and an eagle on the short par 4 7th

back 9 was a complete different story with 11th tee shot OB but i did manage to make a 5 (2nd ball birdie ;-D ) and also a lost ball on tee shot of 12 as well, finishing the back 9 in 43 shots 8over gross

total score of 78 which if anyone told me i would shoot before i started i would have gladly took it but after the front 9 i was dissapointed to say the least

oh well 0.6 cut and try again next round ;-)

this is where my tee shot on the 7th finished, i was told by the group behind us who just finished the 6th that my ball actually hit the pin
oooo so close to my first hole in 1

Maybe I'm wrong but it doesn't sound as if Styrrup is your home course so how come you get cut 0.6.

unfortunately i am not a member anywhere but i do use a handicap tracking system and a website called golfshake.
it is not congu affiliated but does give a little reflection as to what handicap you could be.
you cannot use this handicap as a basis to enter any competitions but for people who like me are not a member anywhere for whatever reason that may be.

using this tracking system it shows me i am roughly playing to a 9 handicap and after i used the software to input my round yesterday it gave me a 0.6 cut based on the sss of the course

Ah, I see. I always think it's a great pity when players with ability such as you don't have the opportunity to play competitive golf by, for whatever reason, not being a member of a club. Still, you are obviously enjoying your golf.

Depends on what you mean by 'competitive' golf. Several of the guys I play with maintain their handicap this way - one even being a member of that club! Every round is deemed 'competitive' in the US/Slope style. One totted up the amount he'd spend on subscriptions versus green fees and decided being a nomad was significantly cheaper as well as providing more variety. It's only on the (extremely rare) courses that require handicap certs that there's any problem. Handicaps (6/7 and 8/9) seem pretty right too.

16 and 23 stableford pts for me yesterday epitomises the 9/9 split we h/casp golfers too easily suffer.

And I started with three pars - always an exellent start - then blobbed our relatively simple 4th and 3-putted 5th. So 16 points going out playing well. Could have got down but stayed positive and birdied 10. \In trouble on 11 - kept calm and got a nett par. Finished par on our gvery tough 17th after poor tee shot (chuffed) and eagle 3 pitch in from 30yds on last. 23pts in.

It is hard but if you can get your mind to play one shot at a time and not worry about the possible outcomes of the shot - to really able to put a bad shot, a bad hole, a clutch of bad holes behind you and trust that you can play to or below your handicap, then you really can.

Playing in a stableford last week I shot 37 on the front 9, which is +1 gross, and +10 on the back nine. Still shot under my handicap.

Two days later in a medal I shot 9 over on the front and 4 over on the back.

If only I could take the better halves...
