JJF69 and myself failed at the final hurdle yesterday in the Volvo matchplay championship finals. The final was held at Kilmarnock Barassie in what can only be described as monsoon conditions. It was quite clear that Volvo put money and organisational headaches before the needs, welfare and enjoyment of the competitors as the course was unplayable from the off. Still it was the same for everyone.

The weather was simply vile, with single figure temperatures, gusting winds and consistently torrential rain all day. Despite that we got off to a decent enough start and we both played some really decent stuff considering the weather. We managed to grind it out and hit the turn with a respectable 18 points. The highlights of the front 9 being me pitching in for a fighting bogie 1 point with my second ball and JJF69 crashing a driver, hybrid combination into 9 before smashing a 10 foot putt in for a birdie 3.

The course was unplayable right from the first tee shot however by now it was becoming an absolute farce. Rivers and puddles were on every green and the fairways were like paddy fields. At times you were having to move your ball off the green to pitch back onto the green due to the amount of water in your line. Again only the Volvo organisers who were sitting in the warmth and comfort of the clubhouse drinking tea can answer why they never saught the help of the greens staff to get squeegees out onto the course. Couldn't care attitude would probably be accurate. The walk from the 12th green to the 13th tee turned into a wade through ankle deep water as the path winds its way through the gorse bushes. I did chuckle though when JJF69 managed to topple his trolley clubs and all into the rather large 30 foot puddle. I think you may have heard the outburst and sweary words in London. Its amazing how much someone elses misfortune can cheers you up at times!

Sadly we couldn't keep up our decent golf and the conditions wore us down. By the turn I was shivering uncontrollably with the cold and even with a change into a dry watefproof jacket I was still unable to regain any sort of comfort or warmth. The fact that we were playing with two snails did not help matters. I played golf in a medal last month with an 82 year old who was quicker than these two. I was that embarrassed that I apologised to the game behind us as I came off the 11th tee. Even after JJF69 had words with them on the 14th tee where he informed them that we were 4hrs 15mins to there they failed to take notice, in fact I think it had the opposite effect and they got slower. Game number 1 finished a full hour ahead of us, yip, we were game number two and had to endure a 5hr 35min round. Total joke. Honestly these guys made Ben Crane look like Usain Bolt on steroids!

The winning total was 35 points and despite or best efforts and some desperately unlucky putting on the back 9 we could only muster 31 points. 4 three putts on the back 9 does sound terrible however the greens were a lottery, was the ball going to stick or skid when hit due to the amount of surface water?

I'd just like to thank everyone for there support and good wishes, sadly we fell at the last hurdle. Also cheers to Mike and Jezz for allowing us to represent team GM, we had a great time and met some really decent people on the way.

Finally Volvo, you guys know you got it very very wrong yesterday. The course and conditions were unplayable from the off and you got it oh so wrong. I appreciate that people have to travel and take time off work etc, but so did I. Congratulations yo the winners as 35 points yesterday was awesome golf.

Shame, getting to the final only to have to battle it round in those conditions seems a bit unfair and for a final I'd have thought they would have had a marshall out checking speed of play. I just hope the two you were playing with didn't win.

Well done for getting to the final, thats a great performance.
The 31 points still seems very good considering and not far away from top spot.

Did you pick anything up for getting into the final?

Shame, I'd posted about you yesterday!

I think it's a bad show by Volvo playing in these conditions, totally devalues the years efforts plus it's not good pr for Volvo.

Great effort guys , sounds as you say the golfers were forgotten yesterday to avoid the headache of reorganisation , must have been pure hardship playing that slow in those conditions , i supose the course ranger wouldnt even go out in that .. Great achievement geting that far & its a pity ye didnt get good day to at least enjoy the final no matter what the result .. congrats on representing yourselves & GM so well , hats off to ye both ..

I learned that I'll NEVER EVER, national final or not play golf in these conditions again. That is a FACT.

Only trenchfoot by the sounds of it;)

Unlucky lads, you did the forum proud and it's just a shame that the slowies in your group compounded the elements. I guess the logistics for rescheduling were too costly and inconvenient - shame though as it sounds like the sponsers could have made a bit more effort to keep the course playable - that weather was forecast and a few men with squeegees could have made a difference?

Unlucky old boy, by the sound of things glad i lost my last match and didn't have to make the trip down for that weather.

Do you know who won the singles?

sorry to hear guys, great effort getting that far and a real shame that you were only beaten by a farce and 2 guys who dont deserve to call themelves golfers if it took them 5 1/2 hrs

Sorry Patrick I do not. The singles had showered, changes, eaten, and had their prize giving BEFORE I got off the course. Thats how slow our partners were.

Shame such a big occassion was spoiled by terrible weather and Volvo being determined it was going ahead regardless. Had a similar experience years ago playing in final 'William Lawson'( big whisky company at the time) competition played over Westerwood, rain was so heavy they were out changing the holes as we approach each green even though there was at least 20 players ahead of us. I understand the company have put a lot of time and effort into the 'big day' but it certainly appears it's just all about them promoting their company. Well done guys for getting round at all especially with the two twats you had to endure, think you deserve a prize just for putting up with them.

Crawford, when you didn't post the result yesterday I assumed it had been rained off. It was ridiculous to expect anyone to play in those horrendous conditions we had in the West.

BUT, it was a great effort to get to the final. Well done guys.

Unlucky chaps. The weather was atrocious yesterday for sure and pretty surprising it never got called off. Always next year!

Shame it was turned into a golfing lottery. You didn't deserve that after doing so well to reach the final. Still take pride in what you acheived and hopefully you'll go one step further next year and win it. Have you thought about writing to Volvo and asking the question and seiing what sort of response you get. Might be interesting if you point them in the direction of the thread too

AArgh sounds like agony boys, well done for seeing it through though and a healthy 31 points by the sound of the conditions! Tis a shame they didnt rescehdule it...could have been a much better day, well done anyway for getting that far and scoring so well!

I didn't post because my fingers were not thawed out sufficiently to type. I actually still have pain in my hands today after yesterday.

lightweight ;)

nah, you done well to finish by the sounds of it, played a round |Sunday as a 2 ball that took 5hrs cos the bloke took about 30 practise swings every shot, no wonder I got through 20 smokes.

as said above, 31 points aint too shabby considering and theres always next year!

Hard luck Crawford, conditions were atrocious through here on Monday so it must have been worse down the coast. The pair of you did well to get through to the Final. Well done.

Just to add to this, no sure if Crawford or jj were aware but the greens staff were out just in front of the first group of singles moving all the holes to higher ground on the back 9, as if things wernt hard enough !!

Just to reiterate what's already been said but deff was the worst golfing conditions I've ever played in. I don't mind playing in the rain but that was something else... Soaked through 5 layers on top 2 of which were waterproofs!!

I only managed to get 28 points on the day which was only good enough for 4th place, winner of the singles was off 5 and managed 33!!

Was a shame to make it that far and basically pull a name out a hat to see who wins, would rather have been beaten for playing crap!!

Awe well, next year?

Not at all aware of that, however to be fair we were probably a 2 day camel treck behind by that stage. Also why did they not put out a few squeegees then?
