I've been playing now for 18months and have managed to qualify for our club championship final this Saturday. Its a 36 hole stroke play event with lowest scratch securing the title of Champion Golfer (no chance of that), also the lowest nett secures the title of Club Medallist. This will be my first ever 36 hole comp, so was wondering what advice I could garner from you wise folk as to what would be a good way to structure my day so as to not put undue pressure on myself.

I've only played 2 open comps (both last month both 18hole events) and faired dismally because I was trying to hard to shoot a "number" that is one lesson I've learnt , to let a score take care of itself. So any other advice greatly received.

Cheers Fader

We've our club champs Saturday too, I'm along to make numbers up and hopefully post a decent nett score. Leave the gross to the cat 1 boys.
I would suggest a trolley if you don't normally use one maybe hire?
Try to relax and don't get hung up over your score especially if you drop a silly shoot or two early on.
I always take a spare change of clothes to refresh between rounds and personally avoid alcolhol with your lunch.
Other than that it's just 2 medals on the same day.
Enjoy :)

Play your own game, don't worry about your partners. Don't watch others warm up.

Don't do anything different to what you normally do either. If you usually arrive 10 minutes before your tee time and only hit a couple of putts do the same. If you stretch, hit balls etc. then make sure you allow enough time for you to do it before your afternoon round too. If you have to arrive a certain amount of time before the start make sure to relax, have a cup of tea, read the paper until it would be your usual arrival time then start your warm up preparation as usual.

Any changes to your normal routine will start to put undue pressure on you as you have already taken yourself out of your usual mindset. You want to make yourself feel like it's the usual bounce game with the boys, nothing special today.

Good luck Grumps

If you have a spare set of Golf Shoes and socks that always helps - good supply of fruit and water - I find myself flagging a bit on 31-36 and all that hard work can be undone by lack of energy and concentration
