3 minutes to find ball

I'll note that when I mentioned all of this palaver to Mrs Hogan she thought it all very petty and pathetic - both around the fuss around searching and 3mins, and what she considered the terrible behaviour of the accuser.

And thinking of this with what she saw as disrespectful behaviour by a four ball when we were on holiday and I was playing in Queensland with her walking with me (they ignored me and did not let me play through) - she has told me she'd never consider playing golf. I could keep it.

I tried to explain to her that we as players are largely self-governing when playing, and what happened was mainly because it was a comp, and would most prob not have happened in a casual knock - but she wasn't having any of it,

Not a good perception of our game from a non-player who actually enjoys watching the end of major events - The Masters especially - with me and has got used to golf and golfers having known me, walked golf courses, been at clubhouse events and met members for nigh on 30yrs.

I agree with Mrs Hogan

I agree with Mrs Hogan

She could not believe that in looking for a ball players were limited as we are by the rules - and that any time over 3mins, and all this stopping the clock and restarting it - she just thought it a complete load of rubbish and rather pathetic and petty to be penalised.

On top of the behaviour of the 4ball in Oz. She has thought about taking the game up - but not now - that thought seems to have been discarded into the rubbish bin.

I saw the news on Gmac and immediately thought of this thread.

So just to be clear chaps if you’re in a competition.....

3 minutes is 3 minutes. Time yourself.

I am pretty sure this will have been brought up but I can't find it...and I am sure that the ruling will not have changed from before...

If I find my ball within 3 minutes but in going to my clubs and then returning to play my shot I can't find it - what is the ruling in respect of time available to find it. It might only take me say ten seconds to relocate it once I get back to the area where I had found it - but I might have been within ten seconds of my 3 minutes when finding it from my original search...and the time from finding it on my original search to returning to play it will certainly be over 3 minutes.

Interpretation 18.2

A player finds and identifies his or her ball in high rough after a two minute search. The player leaves the area to get a club. When he or she returns, the ball cannot be found. The player has one minute to search before the ball becomes lost. The three-minute search time stopped when the ball was first found.

When i find a ball in deep stuff i always leave my glove or card next to it as a marker, on the very odd occasion i'm off the fairway :ROFLMAO:

Likewise - and so I suspect do most players. Sometimes though it can seem so obvious as to not merit removing my glove - but I don't pay sufficient attention to making sure I know the area my ball is lying in - and after getting my club I don't find it immediately.

Interpretation 18.2 give me the answer. Though it does tell me that if I find it just inside my 3mins I could easily exceed the 3mins if I don't find it immediately on returning to play it. Now that would be a tricky one to call someone out on - or call myself on...

It also says to me that as soon as I find my ball I really should call out 'clock stopped' before going to get my club and return to play it...because if I don't the clock is NOT deemed to have been stopped?

The clock will have stopped regardless of what you do but it may be worth holding your stopwatch in the air so everyone can see it and when you restart it  ;)
