3 foot putts

PJ, how long is your backswing for the 3 footers?
I see lots of people who swing it back too far then slow down into the ball.
Put another ball 5-6ins behind your target ball and stop your backswing before you hit it.
This will promote a more positive follow through.

Guilty as charged. :)

In the past week I've slowed my takeaway right down with the short putts and then simply stroke through, I was a bit snatchy recently and missed far too many... slow and smooth now, pushing through to the hole.

Putted quite well today and missed nothing of consequence.

PJ- if your pro is anything like mine, he watched me hole about 7/10 putts, made a couple of slight adjusments and watched me hole a few more and then told me to practice without taking a penny off me.

If your sure there is no problem then maybe just ask him to have a little look in the shop.

But to echo what the guys said, a lesson on the part of your game you spend doing most is always an investment.

Have a putting lesson.Faults in all parts of your game, including putting, will show up under pressure of a comp.If your putting stroke is perfect then consult a shrink!

Read Rotella, putting out of your mind. It is a good read, and basically says sod technique, just trust your self to hit it in the hole. If you do, you will.

Hi PJ,

Not sure if this drill will help but thought I'd share with you. To help build confidence before I set out onto the course and to improve my short putting my pro gave me the following drill.

1. Get a bag of coins (I use 5ps)
2. Measure a putters head length from the hole
3. Put down a coin marking the spot
4. Putt 5 balls from that mark
5. Use the putters head length starting at the coin and place a second coin down
6. Putt 5 balls again from the new mark
7. Keep repeating this gradually moving further away from the hole
8. Here's the catch if you miss a putt you have to start again from the beginning
9. Your score is the number of putts you sank, when you get really good the coins help as a useful reminder
10. The line of coins is also a great visual cue for your putting stroke

Works a treat for me because it starts to build pressure on you while you practice because the first 30 putts are so infuriating and you want to get to the longer ones. And if you are competitive like me you'll be wanting to beat your previous best score. Sounds easy but is a lot tougher in practice.

The good thing is that say you get up to 12 coins twice before you go onto the course you would have holed 120ish putts and missed only two!

won the medal on saturday by one shot,i shot 62 net, however missed 3 putts under 4ft,played this morning and scored 42 pts with an nr,also missed 2 3ft putts, just wait till i can putt single figures no problem

one of the best things i ever read in a magazine (tipwise, i mean) is set yourself up and before you take the club away take a deep breath, this relaxes your arms and your grip slightly, now go through the stroke and on exhale only when the putt is on the way to the hole. For reasons i wish i could explain this leads to a much more positive stroke and i've holed a lot more putts since!
