2026 Targets

Our course is no different in the winter really. Teeing mats but they're not much shorter than the normal course so the ratings don't change. I'm certainly not putting any cards in until at least end of March I would think. Having said that, I've had two rounds in the last four weeks that would have been counting scores for me if I had have put them in, haha. Assuming I holed the gimmes I was given.
So none of your mats are more than 10 yards from the fixed markers and it doesn't change the total course yardage by more than 100 yards? They must be pretty close to normal tee platforms at less than 6 yards different as an average.

I've just gone through mentally to work it out: The 5th and 13th mats are probably 20 yards shorter than the normal whites. The 1st, 2nd, 11th, 15th and 16th are in front of the tee boxes, probably 10 yards shorter. All the others are on the tee boxes or level with them to one side, so no change. Total 90 yards shorter than the normal white tees. And they will actually be longer than the normal yellow tees overall as loads of them sit between the whites and yellows.

I'm a bit of a what-will-be-will-be thinker at my time in life with regard to golfing enjoyment. Having targets can set oneself up for disappointments.

I think mine are hopes rather than targets.

I would like to have a score differential lower than 2.0 on my record sometime this year.

I would like to play a round of 6 over par or better with some 1970s clubs. I will find this equally as enjoyable as the above.

First of all, I would like to play my first round of the year - course closed for 5th day in a row.

My target is to get my niggly wrist injuries resolved, this will require some strength and conditioning work - I got some kettlebells for Christmas and will be committing to 3 workouts a week, I did a 10 minute one on Saturday and it beat me up. Next one is tonight.

This will allow me to get back onto the speed training which leads me onto my next target of getting my cruising speed to 105mph.

Index wise, I've crept back up to 10.2, I want to get back down to single figures and maintain it for the whole year.

Asked my coach for his thoughts. He asked my exact…5.8. Well - said he - too low for most if not all handicap comps and not low enough for scratch. So put out of your thinking winning anything…🙄

Great… thinks I. Ideas please. Develop a new skill says he….doing something new well should help you consolidate your handicap. So no reduced HI or CH target. No increase distance. No increase clubhead speed. None of that, Just something new to my game that means I hit the ball better and more accurately more often - that’s all the game is about…hitting the ball and getting it to do what I want it to do.

I know what that something is…my 7i and 6i striking. It’s currently rubbish. Get that working and my 140-170 yd approaches and shorter par threes will see me depend less on my short game.

And just let my handicap become whatever it’ll become. And if my HI this time next year is about what it is today - well that will be just fine and dandy. Maybe one day I’ll get it round level par…but that’ll happen if it happens.

After all - as he said last year he’d say again this year…You are 68 this year not 28, never mind 18. And that’s the truth of it…he isn’t wrong.

The goal for 2025 was get down to a 18.something index and consistent 'bogey golf'. Got to 19.2 in the end so not far off.

I'd like to say I could come down by a couple of shots, however with baby #1 expected in June, frankly playing at all after May looks unlikely! So that being the case, I'll aim for getting out as much as is practicably possible and having fun while I'm at it.

My lowest ever handicap was achieved a couple of weeks before my daughter was born. It was down hill from there. Make the most of April and May this year!

I managed to get out at least once a week for a comp when the 1st came

Made other sacrifices like didn’t go out drinking much (hangovers are awful with babies and now toddlers) and sacked off the season ticket

Need to find time for yourself and if golf is your main hobby I’d discuss it with the missus get out early and get back before midday you’ll be knackered anyway 😂

And prepare for some brain dead course management

Big reason I gave up alcohol altogether. Can't afford to have a hangover when I never get a lie-in anymore. Just not worth it!

Edit: Forgot to add - when my little one was born, three years ago, I had a month off from golf but then I was back to playing once per weekend pretty much. Early on a Saturday usually, so back by lunch. Wife just takes the little one out to the local coffee houses or the shops with Grandad etc. As you say - if you've only got one main hobby you need that time for yourself every now and then. I did give up football pretty much completely but had to keep the golf.

When mine were little my golf time was twilight on a Sunday. Family time Saturday and Sunday day and then tee off about 4ish Sunday. Normally the course was empty and we could fly round.
As they got a bit older I would take them swimming on a Sunday morning so the wife could get a bit of a lie in.
I soon found out trying to stop 4 kids drowning with a hangover isn’t a lot of fun.

When mine were little I realised that disappearing early on a Saturday made me unpopular with the wife. So I used to sort out the kids in the morning, allow my wife to have a bit of a lie in, then play in the afternoon.
