Reading Sky's website, Webb Simpson, Jason Day and Mark O'Meara have pulled out of the Open for various reasons.
There's a couple of spots up for grabs at the 2 events currently being played.
As it stands there are 155 players qualified or exempt. Add in the 2 spots from the current events and you have 157 - more than the standard 156. As a result, according to Sky, Ben Crane, who is 1st Reserve, won't get in unless the 2 spots are not claimed by somone finishing top 5.

How can you have a 1st Reserve for The Open - you're either qualified/exempt or you're not....?

Just say another 10 players had to pull out. Would those who failed to qualify at Sunningdale suddenly find themselves qualified after all?

If Crane is qualified, why isn't he in the line-up...?

aren't these the guys that fell just outside the qualifying. if 10 people pulled out the next 10 best from qualifying would get in.

Yeah I think OP's point is that it is unclear which non-qualifiers will get the call up. Presumably there is some priority ranking between the various qualification routes and the the next best score from the first ranked qualification route gets the gig.

The final qualifying was at Lytham I think so there will be at least 50 people to go back through from that. Could be interesting wait for anyone who just missed out. There have been times when there had been an odd number qualified and they need marker.

It wasn't, you don't qualify on the competition course. Local finals were Hillside, West Lancs, Southport and Ainsdale plus St Anne's Old Links.

There were many final qualifiers, from international final qualifiers to local final qualifiers, I can't see how they can separate all the near misses, for me the only way is those in the OWGR

If you look at the scores from the local qualifiers you'll see a number beside all those that never qualified. That is their number on the reserve list

Surely people who just missed out via world ranking have more claim to a place than people who are are not only not ranked high enough but couldn't manage top 10 in qualifying?

should some of those that get an automatic invite stand aside now and let other more competitive players enter, lets face it some of the old timers are well past their sell by dates and it does nothing for their reputation,do a jack and retire gracefully. As for some of the yanks, they don't take the open with the esteme it should have and it has no meaning for them,if the refuse once cancel their invite next time, simples!!
