I see that Atthaya Thitikul has just won the latest LET event, I have seen some very good junior girls at Lancashire events but that is something else. As well as playing so well to have the mental strength is amazing.

Its an amazing achievement especially as you say to be so mentally strong as well as physically at such a young age.

It seems Asian countries really do start teaching young and the kids seem so dedicated.

I feel we are years behind in this country on many sports purely because we don't start them young enough or push hard enough.

Asian countries are starting to dominate many sports and that trend will certainly continue.

I think kids that age probably play without fear, especially the ones that have played since they could walk.
I remember Rory playing the British Masters at the Belfry as an Amateur invite and having a chip on the 18th.
He'd gone long through the green and needed a log back but the pin was on the top level.
He just got his lob wedge under it, looped it high and dropped it by the hole.
Watching back later on TV, all the commentators, including current Pros, were all saying it was a very risky shot but he played it with out a care.
I suspect this young lass works on the same principle - nothing to lose, play without fear...
Good on her👍

I guess that is part of it. I remember hearing Michelle Wie say in an interview that when she had her first really big wins and all that media exposure that came with that (I think she wasn't much older than 14 as well, when she first got into the limelight), she did not even realize how special that was. It was just what she did and came as a natural progression out of how her childhood had been. It wasn't until she started to realize how unusual that was, compared to the "normal" careers the others players surrounding her had have, that she started doubting herself.

But whatever role fear or lack thereof played in it: fantastic achievement by Atthaya Thitkul.

One of my county teammates just won the Scottish girls championship - youngest ever winner at 13. But to win a pro event at 14 is truly remarkable!

Great performance from your teammate to win a National Championship FD.
Even more special for the young Thai golfer, prodigious talent.
My seven year old granddaughter is Thai and British, I may well get her to a pitch and putt course when they visit next month from Switzerland.

Fantastic achievement but as a caveat, how strong is the LET these days and in this field. I totally accept that you can only beat what is in front of you and to do so at such a young age is great, but just putting it out there as a discussion point

Amazing performance from someone so young - what a wonderful win regardless of the tour.

Someone putting a "caveat" on

I'll throw a slight spanner in the works. Not sure how healthy it is for a 14yr old to be playing in pro events. I wouldn't let them play until 18.

No question about ability but there is a bigger picture than that.

What's the bigger picture though ?

As long as she is good enough age shouldn't matter , as long as she is carrying herself off in a mature manner then it shouldn't matter.

Get what you're saying but translate it to a 16 year old playing in the Premier league...if you're good enough you're old enough..?

I read on twitter last night, that she only reached scratch last year so she clearly has worked hard on her game in the last year and it is paying off.

I agree that as young as she is she shouldn't play full time on tour but for promising young talents I don't see anything wrong with them testing their games every once in a while. Surely it would inspire them to stick at it and work harder on their games.

That is just mental. Amazing.

Being a dad cant help but to wonder what happens to this childrens childhood tho.

The bigger picture is how it affects her over the course of her whole life, not just the immediate days, weeks, months. Prodigies rarely come out as rounded human beings in the long term. She needs to be protected, be a kid. Play golf at junior level around the world, go to school, play with your mates. Plenty of time for her to be a golf star when she is old enough to cope with it. 14 is not old enough.

It's the Ladies European Tour - I think she will be safe and very level grounded, still playing with her friends and school etc - no point playing at a junior level if she is clearly good enough to play on the tour.

Go on the tour with adults, away from home, chaperoned wherever she goes, cameras in her face. No, have a life with people your own age and then go on the tour. She is a child still. A child that plays golf exceptionally well but still a child. She needs to be protected.

Who says she isn't being protected anyway ?

What happens if none of her friends play golf ? Her parents are with her all the time she seems very well grounded and sensible

Maybe judge each situation on its own merit

A lot of the Far East lady golfers are playing away from home from early ages - it's what is making them so good at the game
