120 yards In!

120 for me, depending on pin position and other factors is an easy 9 iron.

I hit my PW 116 so, if I gave it a bit of wellie, it would get there but would be carrying too much spin, making judging how it will react on landing a lottery at best.

You will already know that I am a fan of getting some pressure into practice so you can take it to the course.

The drill/practice challenge my son was given at County training at the weekend was great.

Get some football cones or equivalent set six feet (radius) around an imaginary "flag" at 30 yards, same at 50 yards, same at 70 yards. Count how many shots to get 5 to pitch in each 12 ft diameter circle (15 hits in total). Most of the lads were around 110 pitches and these are all category one players (one had to be told to stop or he would starve to death). County legend is 25 shots. Keep a record and try to beat it.

50 - 120 yards I'm not too bad it's the shorter ones that I'm having to work on at the moment especially within 15 yards of the green as I've taken up duffing them. Didn't used to do it so it's just a matter of getting a lot more practice in on that shot.

I've improved greatly on those little 15 yards and closer shots. It was highlighted to me that I was quitting on the stroke. The practice strokes were perfect but then I'd hesitate on the one that mattered, it was all about committing to the stroke with me.

Same for me and I was doing it with the putter leaving every putt a couple of feet short. Practicing my putting stroke in the living room or on the practice green when I can and chipping practice in the back garden with a mat and a washing basket to chip into. It's helping a lot on both counts. I'm also stopping my wrist breaking on the short chip shots and using my putting stroke for them.

target the flag from sides, then quadrants

This is excellent, I'm going to give this a go big time.

Kid2 can I also add that if at all possible you should practice off grass with the ball you usually play, hitting range stones from a range mat to these distances definitely affects your yardages. Best of luck chap sounds like a good season awaits...

take a 120 yard flag......and pick your club, preferably not your 118 one (if you have one)

now target the flag from sides, then quadrants - starting with 3 balls at a time ie - start with 3 balls at the flag but not left of it, then the other side, then back etc this will get you understanding how to ensure missing to one side or other, but as you get confident (good!) you will aim in closer and closer - effectively improving both your dispersion and confidence in approaching any flag.

then move on to quadrants - front, back, left, right (which is why you need a club that can comfortably go long. you will develop confidence (competence) in how you best adjust for length and line, which you can then apply to any clubing situation.

record your success (or otherwise) to monitor progress - this will keep interest as well as replicating the additional pressure of a scoring situation on the course. record your estimate of the landing distance from target as a % of the target shot eg for 100yd flag you might aim right and get one 5 yds R, one 8yds R and one 2 yds L = +5, +8 and -2. Your objective is obviously +1+1+1 but you can learn a lot from this as -1,-1, +4 suggests a lack of committment to the objective rather than poor capability, and may well be an indication that you struggle to commit to strategic play on the course as well.

finally, enjoy all such sessions - not worth it otherwise :)

That's great advice. I'll be practising that next time out.

I was hitting my wedge 125/130 but my dispersion was all over the place , wedge is now 110/115 , with 130 being a nice smooth 9 , seems to be working , first OOM this sunday so will soon find out , medal tees , strokes , no hiding ..

easier and smoother seems more accurate anyhow . have followed Bobs advice & added a 52* wedge , (thanks Bob) seems to be giving me more options

i hit an 8 iron to pin high last wed morn. 120 yards up a slight hill.

i know in the summer i will need alot less club. during the summer my 52 was in and around the red marker 110yards.
