Just started a diet and according to my phone app you burn 1111 calories using an electric trolley for 18 holes ! now the way i played at the weekend i must have burned nearly 2000 !
oh and 45mins at driving range is 238!
Who needs the gym :whoo:

Not sure I'd go with those figures. 5-6 mile walk pushing an electric trolley and unlikely to hit 1000+ calories unless you weigh a hell of a lot to start with - oops! In fact not even carrying would burn that amount imho.

Edit - just googled and a few sites seem to concur with that amount so maybe it is accurate. Best start packing some chocolate in my bag then

I'm with you Amanda; I'd be amazed if that's accurate!

The problem with that is there's normally a pint of lager and a bacon roll at the end of the round. Generally this doesn't happen after going to the gym ;)

Theres a Morrisons store near me,with a gym less than 200 yards down the road.I've watched women leaving the gym, driving the 200 yards to Morrisons, parking in the disabled parking section (to save them walking another 30 yards further) then buying packs of sausage rolls and doughnuts !!!

I used a fitness app that said it was over 2000 for a full 18 holes carrying. I guess that was a long course, but still great!

I couldn't believe it myself and asked my pro. He told me it's not just the walking, but the 'explosive movement' that is the golf swing which also burns a lot of calories. Hence why a good snack and plenty of water is needed each round.

Interesting!

Nothing would surprise me more...

never in a million years would you burn that many playing 18 holes, unless you where carrying a tour bag with 3 sets of clubs in and taking 200 shots to get around;)

I'm not having it, loads of calories burned.... the expolsive nature of the golf swing :blah:really. If that was the case we would all be super fit athletes!!!

Whilst I may be......

Nowhere near the 1000's im afraid. A 1 hour moderare run burns about 500/600. You cab buy devices that strap to your arm that you have to wear 24/7. It monitors body heat and pulse. They are alot more accurate

I've always assumed it's a bit more energy than walking the distance - but only a small increase. On your feet for a lot longer than it would normally take will add some plus the swinging of a club (not much extra though surely) plus the pushing/carrying an extra load element. I estimate 600 calories for me or thereabouts but would love it to be double!

I'm with Amanda with this.

No way on this Earth can those figure be accurate. I used to burn less than that on a 10k run (Accoring to a Polar RS800 HRM).

A steady walk (Even on a hilly course), with regular stops, and very little resistance is unlikely to burn remotley that kind of energy.

Would be great if it was correct, but I'm highly sceptical. I know how much effort it takes to burn that amount and playing golf is not it. Unless there's some lasting burn that carries on burning calories after you've finished. Would be interesting to have it confirmed.

The level of effort in golf is nowhere near required to put the body into an Oxygen deficit (Basically what you said about a long lasting burn).

High Octane training or H.I.I.T (High intencity interval training) will do it, but definatley not golf.

Edit: Nor is there very little to "heal" after golf. Unlike lifting weights or other exercise.

Just a quick google turned up this http://golf.about.com/od/fitnesshealth/a/golfphysical.htm.

Shame I can't find any academic paper with the info though, Would search for academic stuff but my login details are no longer active. Also not quiet at that stage of boredom yet :).

Study over 9 holes with calorie burning being between 411 (if you ride a golf buggy) and 721 if you walk (and carry). Funnily enough using a push cart only burns 3 calories less than carrying. But at 721 that would burn just over 1400 calories for a full 18 holes if you simply extrapolate out the figures. Let say the electric cart falls between using a caddie and using a push trolley then it will be between 613 and 718. It's still going to be above 1000 calories for a full 18 holes.

Most interesting part is the effect on scores. Lower scores shown for those using a push trolley while carrying returning higher scores. Suggestion is due to the

This page shows different figures but again is interesting. http://golf.about.com/od/fitnesshealth/a/golfphysical.htm

From those figures and assuming an average of 4 hours for a round then just over 800 calories burned while using a cart for 130 pound golfer and around 1200 for the same golfer pulling. Best news being that for more ample people (like myself) they'll burn more over the same duration.

If these studies are in any way accurate then around the 1000 mark would seem to be perfectly reasonable expectation.

I also think higher handicappers would burn more than lower handicapper because they take more shots and therefore experience more physical exertion over the course of the round. All that zig zagging round the course would also increase the distance walked significantly.

Another to consider re: distance walked. The length of the course is a poor indication of the distance you'll actually walk. My home course is a short 6,168 from the back tees approx: 3.5 miles A quick mess about with google maps using as straight a line as possible while sticking to forced routes eg.bridges, paths etc. Takes the walk up to 8500 yards from the which is just shy of 5 miles. This doesn't account for elevation or the common deviations which would increase the distance. My course is also quiet compact. Mmm an interesting experiment for those who want to try it.

I was skeptical when i saw the figures too. Ive looked it up on numerous websites though and ive even asked my doctor and they all seem to concur that the figures stack up. Ive yet to find any evidence that its not correct.

It takes no effort at all to burn about 2000 calories daily.
