1 shot or 2 shot penalty?

I'd like to think I have a good grasp of the rules of golf, but one thing I do struggle with is how many penalty shots the infringment carries. Does anyone know of a simple way to remember whether it's a 1 shot or 2 shot penalty?

Now there's a question Smiffy, and that's the problem I have. There are so many infrigments putting 1 or 2 stokes to them is my problem. That's why I'm asking is there an easy way to remember which carries what?

I read somewhere that an intentional infringement gets 2 shots and an accidental gets one.

Am I reading that right? Does that mean if you hit the pin with a pitch from 18 yards away, you get a two stroke penalty??

this was in the mag recently as a rule of thumb intentional infringements are 2 shots (ie rory removing sand from his line) but accidental ones are 1 shot pens.

there isn't one that's 100% applicable.

you can could consider that technical breaches that can be reversed are likely to be 1 shot, or 2 shots if they aren't, or can't be, reversed and DQ if they aren't reversed and you gain a significant advantage....

1 shot when they are accidental, and are reversed

DQ if an unquantifiable advantage is gained and you should have known better

but I wouldn't rely on any of these - the rules are free; carry a copy.
