Just had a birthday .. been given £200 for new irons, handicap of 24 ish, only tend to use 6 upwards what would anyone suggest .. doesnt have to be new can look at E-bay etc... given my last set away so clubless at the moment !!

i reckon you can't go wrong with the callaway x series.i personally use the x-14 irons and i love them.

regardless of whether you are a high handicap player or low handicap player these irons work well and still look great.you'll pick up a set in good condition with good shafts fitted for under £200.

Would second the MX-23's. A fantastic club that helped me drop from 28 to 12. I think thay came with DG S300 or R300 as standard. Pick up a set on eBay, get them regripped (if needed) and your away....

Hi and welcome.

Any sort of cavity back, "game improvement" club from one of the top brands would be fine.

As, if not more, important is getting a shaft that suits you. If you give us a bit more info about your game you should find that people on here can point you in the right direction on that too.

Do you swing it hard and fast or slow and easy. Did you have steel or graphite in your old clubs? What sort of shots were you mostly hitting (high, low, left right)?

If there is a good pro shop nearby pop along there for some advice. Again if you let us know where you live someone on here will probably be able to recommend somewhere.

I think it's a shame that many pro shops tend not to have second hand gear these days and you have to use the big retailers (like American Golf) or e-bay or Golfbidder which can be a minefield if you are unsure what to look for.

Oh and stick around and join in the forum. Tell us what you got and how you are getting on. Lots of good advice on here about all aspects of the game and some cracking debates about what's happening on tour etc, not to mention great opportunities offered courtesy of GM and editor MikeH.

I believe one of those triggers for starting Golfbidder (originally called MashieNiblick!) was the number of 2nd hand sets that Pro shops had but couldn't shift.

Model was, and probably still is, for Pros to get price from them as 'trade-in' price so Pro wasn't lumbered with unmoveable stock and MN/Gbidder had guaranteed stock lines.

So Golfbidder's existence is actually the cause of those 2nd hand sets disappearing from Pro shops - to most Pros, and their accountant's, joy!

For £200 you could get a new set of Nike Cavity Backs, Wilson DI9's, Callaway FT Ibrids, Cobra S2's all of which are good quality sets which will help bring your handicap down. For a little more you may be able to pick up some TM Superlaunch or Callaway X22 irons both of which are end of production models but very good clubs.

Alternatively £200 will get you a very good second hand set of TM, Callaway, Mizuno or Pings. If you can get a relatively current model it's unlikely you'll lose too much money on them if you decide after a while that they aren't quite what you were looking for.
