Mahan: current WGC Matchplay champ
Fowler: superb Ryder Cup comeback in singles last time, first tour win this year.
I think they both would have more to offer than Furyk and Sneds.
Harsh on Mahan I think. He peaked too soon I suppose in that his form was around the WGC matchplay. Fowler has been a bit cold of late, but I'd have liked him as a gritty matchplayer, as shown at the last Ryder Cup.
Snedeker? His meltdown at the Open didn't convince me he was a big time player...
I hear what you are saying. A few aspects of club membership that I would miss though:
- chance to pop to the course on a whim and play a few holes
- proper grass practice facilties
- sense of being in a club and regular competiton against mates.

As you have just done your GCSEs, have you stopped growing? You might outgrow this set if you suddenly shoot up, so bear that in mind in deciding whether to get an interim set or some to keep for 5-10 years.
How do you anticipate your handicap and game developing...
I can understand why shops are less keen on back to back comparisons, in case they can't beat the orignal club, but it's the only way they have ANY chance of gettign a sale out of me!

Brand and reputation can be very fickle things and it can take the smallest thing to damage or boost a brand and send a firm soaring or crashing.
In my mind the "quality" brands in golf: Mizzy, Titleist
Mid level: Callaway, Ping
That leaves Taylor Made, Nike, Wilson, Cobra...
