Not if the bar is a franchise and many are, in Scotland at least. If not, why not increase the fees rather than hiding it.

I remember my first club put out an offer of Life Membership at a cost of 8 years subs.....limited to 10 applicants.. They got 4 or 5...

4 year lump up front, if on taking it up the person falls ill or is leaving the Club etc you can get a refund pro rata.

That's a big red flag in my eyes and I'd be very wary. That sort of request suggests financial problems.
