Your Strangest Club Golfer, and I mean golfing wise, not personality wise.

I appreciate we all end to use different clubs for different shots, and there are no two players the same. For example, PI prefer to long put, than chip, and I also prefer to over club and then strike the ball softly. Of course, this may all change in time.

I play regularly with an elderly chap who has played for many years. The only iron in his bag he will use is a pitching wedge, and then only from about 50 yards max. Apart from that he will only use woods, and not even a hybrid. This next bit I swear is true. A few weeks ago he used a 3 wood to chip a ball over water 100 yards. He put the ball within a few feet of the pin, REALLY

We have a golfer whose swing looks like a full swing version of Michelle Wie's putting stroke. I am not kidding you. He is leaned over so far, it is inconceivable that he can turn his upper body from that position. But he can. He even hits it quite well that way. But I always feel I need a chiropractor from just looking at him.

Last years lady captain had a back swing which made john Daly's look like 3/4 punch.

She also had a 2 second pause before starting the downswing.............strangely enough, she's not very good :)

I once played with a bloke who was right handed, but placed his left hand under his right. He was probably the worst golfer I have seen, after me of course.

There is also a guy at my club I play against quite often. He is in his seventies, and been playing for years. When he swings his arms stay almost still, whilst his body does everything else. It looks very strange, but sickeningly he is actually quite a good golfer, and plays off about 20.

I don't like to call him strange, more unique tbh, but a good friend of mine has a home made swing aiming around 20° open but hits a draw; uses a hybrid which cost 50p from a charity shop; slices putts so viciously you can see the ball spinning left to right as it travels forwards(ish) and thinks nothing of hitting his ancient 1 iron out of fairway bunkers. He's been single figures for nearly 40 years and has won over 60 trophies. I can't hold a candle to his ability.

Bloke at my previous club played every weekend, hail, rain or shine in a collar and tie plus tweed jacket!

You see, all this makes me wonder if I am doing the right thing. I have had several golf lessons and am attempting to like a proper golfer. I know I haven't been playing very long, and I am quite old to start, however I have been told by two pro's and a few experienced players that I have a decent swing. Almost on a daily basis I get beaten by old aged pensioners who have swings like gorillas with cerebral palsy. I know their years of experience helps, but it really does get a bit disheartening sometimes.

There are many ways to get the ball down the fairway and into the hole. Lessons etc. will almost certainly be the quickest route to success (whatever that is) but there are alternatives. Get the basics right and then just play as much as possible learning along the way would be my advice for what it's worth.

We had a player whose swing could be described as follows: The first foot of the take away was normal, then he would stop and squat down, then the backswing would continue with a massive John Daly type over swing, then he would stand up again and come down with a massive over the top downswing, and finally he would almost swing himself off his feet in the follow through. Amazingly he usually managed to make contact with the ball and hit what he described as a power fade (huge slice really) which often found the centre of the fairway. His handicap was about twenty. Unfortunately he has moved away to a new area and a new club. I really miss watching his unique swing! :(

P.S. His practice swing looked fairly normal!

A senior guy I know uses a 5 hybrid, a chipper and a putter. He has other clubs, might use one of them for a single shot before duffing it, then returning to the 5 hybrid. He's consistent.

Actually one of my senior golfing friends uses some sort of hybrid for almost every shot and every distance, including chipping from around the green! :mmm:

There's a single figure handicap here who I've seen around a few times, he uses about 5 clubs, none of which is a putter, he uses his sand wedge for putting.

He doesn't use a golf bag, actually plays pretty well.

We have a chap who chips one-handed put plays every other shot in an orthodox manner.

He was given a drill by a Pro to practice short chips with his right hand to stop the dreaded flicking at it on the shot, and when comfortable with the strike to add the left hand. However he liked the feel of the right hand only and slowly lengthened the shot to include 15-20 yards distance.

And here's the thing... he's pretty good around the greens.
