Just changed my PC monitor and have "donated" my old one to one of the twins to use with his X-box instead of the old portable telly he is using at the moment.
The monitor I am giving him is fairly new but doesn't have an HDMI input just VGA and DVI.
I have purchased an HDMI to VGA lead off of Amazon like this....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000F0ERF4/ref=oss_product

Now I understand that whilst the HDMI to VGA cable will carry pictures, it won't handle the sound. So I am assuming that I need one of these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001711TW4/ref=oss_product

which I will plug the red and white audio leads that are attached to the HDMI to VGA cable into.
This in turn will plug into these....

and it will all work????

Basically You need to get a phono to 3.5mm jack converter and a stereo system with an aux in.

White phono into the phono to jack converter (like the one u linked above) and then that jack straight into the aux in of a stereo and your good to go.

Looking at that logitech setup it does have an aux in so it should theoritically work but it looks like it would be the sort of system used for a PC config but it should work fine.

If you have an old hifi lying around you will get a lot better quality out of it generally speaking, those logitech speakers and really flimsy but they do the job for a cheap price. Plus it has a headphone output for when they are being noisy :)

That's what I was thinking. At the moment he is using a small portable telly which has crap speakers anyway. I know these Logitech ones are cheap, but they are going to be an improvement on what he has been listening to up until now (I would imagine) plus he's got the benefit of going up from his current 12" screen size to the 20" LCD monitor, so I reckon he'll be happy enough.
My main concern was whether plugging the red and white phono leads into the single plug and then plugging that into the aux in socket on the speakers would work, and from what you say it should.
Thanks for the response.

Basically, you cabling is fine and that will 100% percent work and you will get a signal.

My main concern is regarding the speakers because they are purpose built for PC's, therefore that would lead me to believe that the final link would be a male 3.5mm jack that would be designed to go into the back of a pc.

To cover you're back get a female to female barrel. You may not need it but you may aswell, If you can't go into the aux in for some reason then at least you can plug the jack from the system into one side of the barrel, and then the xbox converted jack into the other side. Wallah!

Most probably though is that the speaker system will be all wired up, and there will be a jack input on one of the little satellites and they will give you a cable to run from that output into the PC and you will just be able to miss out that section and go straight in with your xbox jack.

Hope I havent confused you. I wish they would just post pictures of the back of these things :)

Nope. Fully understood. I am hoping that the single plugged output from the 360 will just go into a socket on one of the speakers as you suggest but will get the coupler just in case. I'm going down to PC World to pick the speakers up after work and will have a good look at them on display.

Just watched a video on youtube and they showed the back.

You are going to need one of those female to female barrels.

Well at least you're going down to have a look at one and you can see from there.

If it has a jack coming out of the sub that you can't remove you will need a coupler.

Have just ordered one from Amazon as neither PC World, Comet or Currys stocked them....

Keep umming and ahhing over that speaker system. Doesn't get very good reviews if I'm honest, but then it is only £15.00. Might go for a pair of Altec Lansings that they have instead. No sub, but I've had Altec speakers before and they are normally very, very good. A little more expensive (extra tenner or so) but might be worth it.
