My son (Greg) and I have been playing in the winter league this year, its Gregs first year as he only started playing last July.
Yesterday was our final match, and we were playing the pairing who were 2nd in the league (we were top). The position being that a half or better for us would see us win the league, a loss would put us in a 3 way play off.
We started on our 10th, Greg played some great golf, and I helped a bit and by the time we got around to the first, we were 3 up.
They then started to play, and after several net birdies,we find ourselves all square with 3 to play.
Our 16th (the 7th) is toughish par 4, str4 so I am giving 3 shots. Greg hits good 3 iron 2nd to about 60ft, I hit a good 2nd to 15ft, they are both wide of the green. They chip on to 10ft and 4ft. Greg hits poor putt to about 6ft. Luckily, I hole my putt for birdie, and they hole the 4footer for a par net birdie.
The 17th (8th) is par 5 and I'm giving 2 shots, one to Greg and one to one of the opponents. the best we manage is a par from me, which loses to their par net birdie. So we are one down, and have to win the last hole to half the match and win the WL.
Our 18th (9th) is a toughish par 3, well bunkered, plateau green and quite a few trees, but no shots on this hole.
They tee off first having won the 17th, the first one hits a great hybrid to what looks like 12 ft left of the pin. I whisper to Greg that we have to get a 2 now. The 2nd opponent duffs his shot. Greg hits a hook into trees. I take a 5 iron, and just concentrate on keeping my head still, ie no swaying. I make a good contact, and when I look up, I'm really pleased to see the ball heading straight for the pin. It pitches just short and rolls up to what looks like next to the pin.
We walk to the green, and he is actually about 30ft away, and mine is approx 2.5ft past the hole. He 2 putts for a par leaving me to hole mine for a 2, a birdie, half the match and win the Winter League.
I said to Greg, that, that was my shot of the day, he said "No, that was the shot of your life" (he's not quite right, but thats another story)
It doesn't get much better than that. It was great to play with my son. When we started off in the WL, he was off 28, he has now got down to 23, so he has been a very useful partner!
Hope you don't mind me prattling on.
Cheers
Ian
