Why is Lee Westwood...

mucking about in cold Sweden the week before a Major and not over in the US getting used to the heat, the timezone (10 hrs diff I think), the different greens etc as most of the European big guns are doing?

Not the correct preparation imo and with him knocking on 40 why not do everything right to try and finally bag a biggie?

The US Open is in San Fran. Have you ever been to SF in June? Bring a sweater.

The PGA Tour is in Memphis this week, which is hot and humid. Sweden is much closer in climate terms to SF, although it is also 9 time zones away rather than 2.

Edit: Today's high temperatures: SF 21C, Memphis, 31C, Stockholm 16C

maybe he realises he won't be a contender next week. After all it is a Major ;)

OK you said it..............

I would honestly love to see Westy play four great rounds and really nail the US Open so good luck to him and may his putter be inspired and he bares his teeth and goes for it.

I'd like to see him win too... but not until after Tiger has beaten Jack's record (just to shut up the Tiger haters once and for all).

Does raise an interesting point about what the best preparation for a Major is. I'm sure someone somewhere has compiled what recent winners have done the week before and has analysed this but can't find anything on the interweb.

It does seem that winning the week before isn't the best preparation as it happens so rarely. How does it compare to missing the cut or not playing at all?

I've always thought in theory that a decent finish where the players aren't expending too much mental energy but are getting a chance to sharpen up their game and get some confidence would be the best.

If you have ever played a competitive sport at the top level you would know that confidence combined with preparation and ability are the key to success.

A confident player is able to exert his authority on the game and the timing for both Westwood and McIlroy coming into form and more importantly being in the right frame of mind for the Masters cannot be understated.

I honestly feel that this could be Westwoods best opportunity to win a major as everything has come together and his performance in Sweden was beyond reproach.

The World Number Three was simply irresistible from tee to green all week, and could even afford to miss five putts from inside six feet over the first ten holes of his closing 69

That's not an encouraging sign. We all know Lee is one of the very best in the world tee to green. It is his putting that lets him down in Majors. Less than a week before the US Open, you don't want to be missing 5 short putts when you basically blamed your putter as the reason you didn't win the Masters.

I've got a good feeling about Bubba for this one!

Proving once again that he's a better golfer than Monty ever was.

Woah....where did that come from? What's this got to do with Monty? Westwood has picked up his mantle of multiple European order of merit wins but never a major. Monty is from a different era and he dominated his peers for a great number of years.
