Is it me but has the level of animosity that’s crept into members post increased.

As a relative newcomer to the Forum I amazed how quickly threads (especially, it seems to me, in the “Rules..” area) degenerate in ill-tempered slanging matches.

From where I stand (sit), it appears there is an old-guard who it seems feel the necessity to be the only valid fountains of knowledge. Good humoured debate is replaced by strident statements and rudeness where opinions masquerade as fact.

Golf is a sport/game that most of us enjoy for the camaraderie and personal challenge. Pretty much the same reasons we follow a Forum such as this – my Father’s two best observations was “Empty vessels make most sound” and “If you’ve nothing sensible to contribute, contribute nothing” seem to fit here.

In my view nastily, scoring points make boring reading.

Come on children play nicely – the Forum will suffer in the long-term !

Sadly it happens on here and many other forums. I've been on both sides and taken some crap and given some out. Not overly proud but it's history. For the most part I think you'll find 99% on here are pretty decent and well behaved. There are some that maybe come over as argumentative and confrontational but at the end of the day you have the option of the ignore button. Stick with it. A lot on here having cabin fever as it's winter and they haven't perhaps played or practiced too much but I take the point you're making

It's been no worse than usual. It happens with those who don't know each other. Everyone that's met and played get along fine (in the main :o)

Sorry, couldn't resist... :ears:

The rules is a very strange place

Bit like League of Gentlemen - best to stay away unless your yokel :D

Arguments over rules happen in golf clubs all over the country just as they happen in that section of the forum

There are some very knowledgable rules experts who post regulary to help people when they need a ruling check - those threads don't last long as the answer happens quickly

Obviously with some rules the interpretation can be varied and those threads last a little longer

And then some ask for a ruling - get the ruling then challenge it , then change what was being asked , then ignore the ruling and the thread extends and descends a bit

But overall as Nick has said - a lot of people have met each other and get on well but as with most forums it can get a little heated but nothing's "too nasty" so far

Haven't noticed much myself, but then I have a few on ignore.

Look at all the meets that are being arranged at the moment, and the great banter they have attracted. You do get some that sit on the side, don't get involved other than to stir things up, but that happens on all forums. Knobs will be knobs.

As Homer says, it's all too common place on internet forums. Key to enjoying a community (and this one is far better than most to be fair) is filtering out the people who are just out to get bites.

The anonymity the internet gives to people also gives them a confidence that is not always mirrored in the 'real' world.

And this is the problem, I agree with the OP, I was sanctioned in my first week of posting regularly when I let myself get wound up easily and bit (cheers Fish)
It's a cop out to excuse the behaviour to those that have met each other, it's new people(just like Golf) you need to encourage to continue.
it's down to the regular contributorsto ease people in, not put them off in there first week. 😃

But why are you coming onto a forum and 'biting'?

Surely you can take a while to find out the lay of the land.

Some are too quick to take offence, some are just deliberately on the wind up, others are borderline mental cases that should be on some fairly strong medication :o

Because at the time of joining I thought I would be getting helpful friendly advice, being naive, I didn't expect the wind up, (I did email and apologise to Fish), all the OP is asking is to go gentle 😃 with new members, what you type with a smile on your face can be read as a jibe by the reader. We soon learn😜

I wouldn't worry about it, the guys you are on about aren't the old Guard, they have just made a load of posts and not very good ones at that. The sort that would lie about what their handicap is and what club they are members at.

not worth worrying about

Sometimes hard to translate what you are thinking in your head to text without facial expressions, body language etc. And two people may read the same statement and take it different ways. I find the banter to be mostly lighthearted and if it starts getting out of hand there is always the off button.

I tend to find that the anymosity can go alongside anonymity.

The people that get along to meets, or meet people for games seem to generally be alright ones. Meeting them can be a million miles away from what you think their online personality is.
