Thinking of taking a couple of bottles of the holy water when I go visiting friends in the US next week. Will end up buying from Tesco/Sainsbury/Morrisz et al. The guys drink
  • Bruchladdich
  • Balvenie doublewood 12 yrs
I am not familiar with either. Was planning to take 15 yr olds like Glenfiddich or Isle of Jura. But open to suggestion.

What they drink shows a bit of class so I would drop the Glenfiddoch [as they will know it well] and go for something less known in the States.
But then you said Tesco's etc. hmmm, you can buy cheaper at the independents [avoiding the well named ones]
Jura 10 year old or Superstition.
Glenkinchie if they have it [very smooth lowland]
Talisker [Skye]
Bowmore, Caol Ila.

Just a few of the many.

The Supermarket own names single malts are great value and fun trying to work out which one it is. Not suitable for a gift though.

The reason for going supermarket was the time involved.. I need to pick it up this weekend.
I like Jura Superstition, so that might make it to the list

Glenkinchie.. hmm never tried it..

I am not sure Peaty will be in favor, so planning to go more smooth.

Glenkinchie may be a pleasant enough pre-Dinner tipple (a bit characterless for me), but that doesn't seem like what this purchase is about.

Best to try something a bit different. If not Islay, then Speyside would be my suggestion.

Btw. You should learn the difference in spelling - though it was because of the low quality of Scotch that the 'e' was introduced!

You lost me there mate.. Explain yourself or there is no fury like a Mod scorned.. :blah:

The Scots spell it Whisky.

In order to differentiate it from the poor quality stuff coming from Scotland at the time (late 19th Century), the Irish added the 'e'

Not very Scottish sounding innit.... They had a similar sounding president.. So no bragging right..

So it's scotch suggestions you want then not whiskey :P (Very interesting factoid there FH)

Was going to say any of the Irish single malt at least 12 year old Irish whiskeys are worth a shout. Some of the more unusual Bushmill's blends are excellent. If you want something a bit different then the new Bushmills Irish Honey is a winner for something with an beautiful intense taste but less alcohol content and easily sipped as it is.

Personally found the Jura whiskey preferable to Glenfiddich when I tried them.
