We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!
All depends on how far you actually hit your driver (not forum yards) if you only hit it 220-250yds then most holes would require a driver, not counting par 3s,different if your a dustin johnson,I use what ever club is required but I would sooner mash a driver and have a wedge to a green than take a 3wood or long iron and have a 7 iron in,but its a personal choice.
Six par threes at my place and assuming it isn't wind against (I have hit driver at the 229 opener and the 217 yard 17th) that leaves twelve other holes. I would use it on eleven of them in normal circumstances and take three wood at the short 4th. If we get a hot dry summer, there are a couple of other holes where a hazard could come into play (9, 15 and 18) and would think of going to three wood.
If conditions are calm, I normally use it 9 or 10 times (only recently started hitting driver up our 13th but will hit a 3W if the driver's not quite behaving). If the wind is up, I'd use it 11 times, as I'd definitely hit it up 13, and 7 as well.
1st - Driver
2nd - 2h ,4 or 3 iron depending on medal tee position and wind.
3rd - par 3
4th - Driver or 3 wood depending on medal tee position and wind
5th - 3 wood or driver depending on wind
6th - Par 3
7th - 3 wood or 2h depending on wind
8th - Driver
9th - 4 iron
10th - 3 wood (Maybe driver if I gain confidence or want to push for a par 5 eagle chance)
11th - 3 wood or 2h depending on wind (I may switch to driver here if I gain confidence)
12th - Driver or 3 wood depending on wind
13th - Driver
14th - Par 3
15th - 2h
16th - Par 3
17th - 2h or 3 wood depending on wind
18th - Driver
So 6 times a round (maybe soon 8), I usually find the fairway on those ones as there is little trouble to worry about.
I take 3 wood out on holes where I need accuracy AND distance, usually to stop my trying to hit my driver to hard to make a par 4 green in 1. Then I take my 4, 3 or 2h off the rest of the non par 3 tees as I can boom all 3 over 190 yards on holes where I want position rather than distance.
Hopefully the work this week on wedge distances (since my game improvements I have been miles out) will pay off soon!
As I don't get on with my 3w after the driver is my 21 hybrid. My course has differing nines, the front being more placement so driver on first, 6th, 8th & 9th. On the back it's every hole bar the 2 par threes. So 11 times in total.
1, 290yard par4 - 3 hybrid or 4 iron
2, 394 yard par4 - Driver
3, 354 yard par4, dog leg - 3 wood cutting the corner
4, 184 yard par 3 - 5, 6 or 7 iron depending on tee and pin position and wind.
5, 497 yard par 5 - Driver
6, 361 yard par 4 - Driver or 3 wood
7, 379 yard par 4 - dog leg - 4 iron or 3 hybrid
8, 192 yard par 3 - 4 iron (or 5,6,7 depending on tee and pin position)
9, 349 yard par 4 - Driver or 3 wood (this is a wide open hole so Driver is pretty safe)
10, 407 yard par 4 - 5 wood (big trouble right!)
11, 162 yard par 3 - 8 or 9 depending on tee or pin position.
12, 317 yard par 4 - 4 iron (big trouble right)
13, 425 yard par 4 - Driver
14, 531 yard par 5 - Driver
15, 120 yard par 3 - PW
16, 334 yard par 4 - 3 wood
17, 439 yard par 4 - 3 wood or Driver depending on wind (can reach the hazard if wind still or with - so 3w)
18, 446 yard par 4 - Driver
7 or 8 times then - I thought it would be more than that.
