Which Ball To Use??

Hi,

I have been using either PTS or NXT balls for the past year but I am thinking about a change - Game details:

High draw
Handicap 12
Driver - 230-250
7 Iron - 160
Course - Shortish, often windy, small fast greens, tight fairways (Burntisland in Scotland)

Was thinking maybe the PX3 by wilson staff but anyone have any thoughts on balls that may suit my criteria or would a change do any good?

Sorry to be so predictable, but I can't see past the Pro V1/(x) . I notice you've said your greens are small, so your ball may stop a little quicker if you use these. They might give you some more birdie putts as opposed to rolling off the back of the green.

As a cheaper alternative, the srixon AD333 balls have been getting some good reviews, so I'm going to give them a whack this weeekend. I'll let you know how I get on with them.

Hi I tried the AD333 and didnt get on with it. For general play I would stick with the NXT.
I usually use a NXT tour or Pro v but I have recently tried the Callaway Tour Hex 56.
Its just as good as the pro v, if you can tell the difference, but it does tend to stay straighter in the wind.

I find the expensive srixons (zur/s) are too hard off the putter/wedge, and the cheaper varieties(AD333/soft feel) cut up too badly, so no srixons for me.

Callaways (all) are all too hard off the putter, and don't feel too good off the irons either (blades probably don't help). Never feel confident that they will ever stop on the green either.

Nxt are nice, but cut up quickly (tours incl.).

Pts solo, ok for winter.

Prov1/x nice balls, expensive (although american golf do them for 28 a doz.).

Nike One (plat or black) - my current ball of choice. Still cut up a bit but bought 3 doz on the cheap, so who cares. Play nicely, nearly as good as prov, but paid 50 for 36. Also bought 24 TA2spn for 15 which wasn't a bad deal, as these are ok too.

Hogan apex tour (discontinued) - awesome. Hogan tour deep - lost the plot.

Strata - cut up too much, but nice off the driver.

Topflite / molitor / pinnacle - Nooooo!

Bridgestone / Precept / Kasco - not played enough to comment.

Maxfli - Never really appealed. Probably ok, have heard reasonable reports, but never tried them. Seem to bring out a new model, with a new name every month, so confusing to follow what is supposed to do what, and appeal to who.

If your irons don't rip nxts to bits, they are probably as good as any, and cheaper that most.

Have to defend Callaway, I have played every top ball and I still prefer the HX Tour. For you it sounds good as it stays straight in the wind but has plenty of stop for holding those small greens. I disagree that all Callaway balls feel harder off the putter, the HX tour and tour 56 dont. Downside is they cut up quickly, maybe the 2007 version is better for that, dont know.
I trialled Bridgestone 330's last year, went for miles but they did feel very hard, couldn't control them round the greens, haven't tried te 330S ball. Currently trying proV1x and am not quite sure on performance yet as ny game isn't in great shape at the moment but they are very durable, I've had 4 rounds out of one which is unheard of for me, the HX tour could last 1 round only.
If you can afford it try the Cally HX tour and let us know what you think1

Once you have settled on a ball to suit you, stick with it and only have that one type of ball in your bag. Don't fall into the trap of losing a Srixon and then puling out a Titleist. Make sure your replacement is the same as the ball you just played, but take due regard of the need to clearly identify the balls.

Tried the dx2 soft - was given away by a golf mag. Nice off the putter and wedges, but not so long off the driver. Reminded me of the old titleist tour balata, great around the greens, but your mates all out drove you off the tee.

On a different note - the callaways might be better off a putter with an insert - ie: odyessy 2 ball. I putt with a circa 62 No.1, which has a milled steel face. Not a good combination with callaways, even the HX tour.

Have used re-finnished Pro V1's from direct golf through the winter at £12 dozen (if you but 3 doz)you can't go wrong. Have tried most other balls but always come back to the Pro V.
