Hi guys,

I live in North London and was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to get custom fitted in the area?

I went to Silvermere down in Surrey a while ago which was absolutely brilliant but was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere similar that was a bit closer to north London.

Looking for somewhere that preferably has a driving range, a launch monitor and a wide range of brands and clubs to choose from.

Thanks in advance for any suggesions.

The only places I know are down Surrey way too. Precision Golf is in Egham, and are very good. There is also a popular place in Camberley, down the M3 a bit, called Chilli Dip Golf.

I would recommend only going somehow that has an outdoor range access, so I suggest to ask them what their arrangements are before making a booking. Anyone that wants to fit you without seeing ball flight really should be avoided.

Precision Golf uses a simulator. That is good enough for several European Tour and Seniors Tour players who get fitted there. I met one of them one day I was there and he won an event a while later using the clubs he was fitted for.

I'll be honest; I don't rate chilli dip very highly at all.
I remember asking the same question, a while back and this place was on the list. As they were local, I went to check them out.

There were a few things I didn't like:

Everything was done indoors, so you couldn't see the ball flight. They had a trackman which would almost make it ok, but too often it returned no results, because it didn't pick up enough data from the limited flight before the ball hit the net. Made me wonder whether this set up was good enough, and the trackman was correctly calibrated.
Also you hit off a mat, but the slot to put the tee is terrible, I often struggled to get the tee to stay upright and balance the ball on it, and when I did many times the tee was way too high. When I suggested this wasn't representative of how I would hit a shot, I was told not to worry about it.

I wasn't convinced of their knowledge\attitude. A couple of things struck me as off. I was borderline between 2 shafts according to them, so I said I thought maybe it would be better to pick the one that has the most room for me to 'grow into'. The guy told me that I wouldn't get better, so no point factoring that in when picking.
I also asked if he aligns the spine of the shaft, to which he told me there was no need to, because manufacturers these days always put the graphics opposite the spine. I wasn’t 100% sure of this, but it doesn’t sound right. Even it if was, what harm would it do to make sure it had been done correctly?

The guy fitting also seemed only interested in the shaft. Once he thought he had these, he was already trying to sell. He didn’t even consider grip style and size, until I asked if this was something we were going to look at.

I also only got to use 1 model of driver head. When I asked about trying others, I was told the head makes no difference, it's only the shaft. Whilst I am aware of the importance of the shaft, I find it hard to believe the head makes no difference at all. As if to prove me right, when I mentioned a couple of heads I wanted to try, the guy told me that these heads weren't as good. Perhaps I should have argued at this point and asked which it was, no difference or these ones weren't as good, but by that stage I had made my mind up as to whether I was going to purchase.

When the session was over, I also felt there was a fair bit of pressure to try and make a sale, and push specific brands, which sort of ties in with the other points i have mentioned. Overall, not a good experience at all.

Precision golf however does look very good, although some may find it pricey. I plan to check this place out at some point, but have not yet got round to it.

Sorry for the long post, but hopefully it will save someone else wasting time and money like I did. Also not meaning to hijack the thread, but if anyone can confirm my suspicions as to what the fitter said being false, or improve my knowledge and explain why they are true, I would be interested to hear, and it might be useful info for the OP also?

this is the sort of thing that gets the guy who fitted me really p'd off. the attitude that it's ok to fob off joe public with any dross.
he told me that he has to reject somewhere around 10% or more of (driver) shafts because they can't be aligned. I watched him aligning a shaft and even with a good one it could take some time to get it spot on - there is no way a standard shaft is aligned, it would just cost too much.
