Out of interest at what point did you decide that it was time to buy new irons? What was the trigger in your head, was it a lack of movement in handicap or perhaps an unwanted increase that led to your decision or was it purely the thought of new shiny sticks? The reason i ask is i am playing with a cheap set of wilson x31 irons from a set that i bought about 4 months ago. My playing partners keep telling me that if i am to improve further i need a better quality set of irons (i am playing off 20 officially but in non competition games i have played to around a 15). I know that lessons will have a big impact but i just don`t know whether its worth buying new irons in the new year or keep what i have. What was the decision behind your last change?

well....
i have been playing with a set of Mizuno MX17's which are about 5 years old, got them new, had a back operation about 3 1/2 years ago and really only picked them up again about a year ago.

as a result of the op, my stance is slightly higher than it was and I found that i was topping the ball regularly unless i really got down n dirty, so the amswer, a set of ping g15 irons, slightly longer than standard, felt good in the range, need to get out and play.

so for me the trigger was a physical limitation

also a desire to do something different

and one day, lord knows when, I will beat Imurg

With me it was how they suited changes in my game.
I used Ping i3's until I had an enforced break from the game for a few years and when I came back I struggled to hit them effectively. I changed to Callaway X-20's for the extra forgiveness and ease of use.
After a year my ball-striking had recovered to the point where the X-20's had too much offset and also began to look huge. So a change to X-20 Tour irons with less offset and less "chunkiness" suited me down to the ground.
Now, they're starting to look a bit chunky and tired so I'm considering the Cleveland CG7 Tour or something similar. If I find irons that work I don't plan on changing them until my game changes.

I reckon you can easily get to single figures with any old piece of tin. Hit the fairways off the tee, find the green from 100yards or less and keep the 3putts off your card... *simples* :)

Every time I hit that horrid little slap to the right.
:(
Fortunately I always stop and remember it is the idiot swinging the irons that needs to be replaced.

I changed simply because I wanted a more forgiving club that would give me more confidence and a better strike. I've used Mizuno TP9s since about 1990 and they're a superb club but only for someone off single figures. I hadn't played for a while so I bought a cheap set of Cleveland CG reds and they're doing the job.

I recently changed from X20's to MP-52's because I'm an egotistical idiot who thought he needed cooler gear and loves new shiny things.

Hows that for honesty ?

My thought would be to get a few lessons and get a decent and repeatable swing. From there you'll get a wider choice of club could look at both cavity and better player type clubs. A lot of new stuff is coming out soon so if you were to have the lessons over the winter you could start next year with a new set of shiny sticks and an improved game and get the handicap down and clean up as well

I am similar to ColinR. I decided if I got to 10 I'd treat myself. Only managed to get to 11 but had my hear set on a set of better player clubs (was going for the TM TP's) but once I had a set of R9's in my hand it was love at first swing. They are great and I have no plans to change now even if I get down into single figures. They've got a great feel and I can move the ball (intentionally) as well.

When I first held a Nike VR TW blade in my hands.....love at first sight...didn't really need a new set, but couldn't resist!! :D

When I found a set of MacGreor blades, in the wrappers, reduced from £600 to 200, and couldn't resist. And again 2 years later when I eventually accepted I couldn't hit them for toffee, and bought a set of Titleist ZB's. Strangely, I can't hit them either. Must be me.

I am struggling with a putter fixation again. I know my Rossa and spider are sufficient (with an odyssey 554 and a ping anser 2 as back up) but I keep finding myself hypnotically drawn to putter displays in my pro shop, on all the online golf stores and at any Nevada Bob or AG I visit. I can hear my credit card calling out as I hold these sticks of temptation but so far my forum friends I've been strong. With your support I can get through this
