Just been thinking about Royal Ascot. Seems as though everyone ended up in the sand. Is it a massively bunker heavy course?

Not that I recall. But Homer will no doubt correct me.
I did end up in one on one of the par 5's. A shot out of the sand for 4, and then a chip in from 40 feet or more for par! Only outstanding bit of the day for me score wise! No photos I'm afraid.

I don't think it is excessively bunkered. Like most courses there is a a smattering left and right of most greens and a fairway bunker on most of the longer ones (although strangely not on 7, 10, 12, 15, 16 and 18). Its pretty fair although we have had a problem with stones and there is a local rule allowing them to be removed before you play the shot

I fancied my chances of a good start last year. 1st hole par 3 and I'm shotting!! Landed in a greenside trap, hit a lovely splash shot out and left my 10' putt about 15 feet short....
Two jerks later and a mahoosive one point on my card.
Smashing.
Did the same on the next hole, hit the green in regulation and three stabbed it.
I think I had 7 three putts and a four putt on the par 3 11th.
