The other thread on first cars got me thinking. What was your first car, and what were the good and bad points about it?

For me. A Ford Cortina Mk5 Carosel Estate 1.6 in a bi-colour dark graphite with silver lower door panels. 1981 vintage.

Pros.
Well being 18, a boot the size of a king size bed...................................made it ideal for carrying around my windsurfing kit around in.

Being such a large car, I soon learnt how to park in tight spots very well.
Cons.
I'd always end up driving on nights out.
Wasn't exactly economic.

Mine was a Volvo 360GLT with some added tweeks like sports exhaust without the bawbag tail pipe and K&N airfilters. It was 2 litre petrol and when you revved it up the whole engine rolled.

Pro's:
It really was a wolf in sheeps clothing and could leave Escort XR3's for dead.

It was rear wheel drive so made donuts possible.

The black paint polished up like wet marble.

Cons:

It was rear wheel drive which made driving in rain make you look like Bambi on acid.

It could drink like an alki locked in oddbins.

PS

I loved it and had it at 126MPH when I thought I was immortal.

Volvo 460 Xi for me. Had so much fun with it, it had huge back seats ;) A cracking roof rack for my surfboards and mountain bikes and a huge boot for my Fencing stuff. Good Times.

1978 Fiesta. 'S' reg.

Pro's? better than riding a bicycle so I didn't end up in A&E quite so often. And yes there is enough room in the back of a Fiesta!

Cons?
So basic it didn't have a rear wiper and the front windscreen washers were operated by a pump button on the floor. And it rusted quicker than a Raw Vokey in a puddle!

You git. You win.

Not in the Imp ( obviously ), but I had an old Cavalier SRi which I got up to 124 mph on the M40 not that long after it had opened.

Had a Toyota Corolla GT once that I got up to showing 130 on the A41 near Bicester many moons ago.
Of course I can't condone that sort of irresponsible behaviour now - but it was bloody good fun! :D :D

The A41 ?

Isn't that the road that is downhill and wind behind, both ways ?

:p

1st car was a 1963 mini, 650cc engine.
Basic no radio, pull wire to open the door from the inside.
And not forgetting the starter button on the floor by the left foot.
upgraded to a 1275cc GT Mini and smashed that one up in 74.
did not have another until 1987 which was another Mini 850cc, and a push button radio.
The days of simple motoring, bumbum blue it used esso blue.

1983 mk1 Ford Fiesta 1.0, however the 1.0 was soon ditched and we dropped in the running gear from a Mk1 xr2 that we did a full comp rebuild on. brakes, engine, gearbox, suspension, exhaust, everything.

All this and it had no body mods at all, it was a hearing-aid beige animal and god it surprised many, many people.

I stacked it about 3 times as you do, god it was fun though!

We still build engines today btw, we have got a Honda crx del-sol (my bros) which we dropped a civic type-r lump in. This has been extensively modded mechanically and computer-wise and now puts out a verified 320bhp. Awesome!

1st Car - Mini, complete with 2 big Spotlights and Wheel Spacers......

Followed by Fiesta, 2 x XR2's, an Escort RS Turbo which got nicked, a Porsche 944, (worst Car I ever owned), 2 x Sapphire Cosworths, (Most fun Cars I ever owned), an Volvo 850R, (complete & Utter Dark Destroyer in Black), and then a few V70's as family life too over.
Now got an E320 Merc Sport estate, which is without question, the most sophisticated and awesome vehicle I have had, and bleedin fast to boot. 20HP more than the Cosworths, 20 less than the Volvo !

Looking back - stupid moments in my motoring history......
Deciding 145mph in the Volvo on the Motorway was time to back off, despite it still surging, the M62 suddenly was developing corners at that frickin speed !
Pulling into a petrol station in the Cosworth with smoke billowing from my front Disc pads.......I swear they were close to igniting, but I loved that Car.

Of course, with my son turning 17 last wednesday, and now wanting to drive, those moments are not something i'd bring up at home !!

'96 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2L

Got it in about 2005 I think for £850 with a full year MOT. It was a great wee runner and had absolutely zero mechanical problems in my time with it but I had it parked on the street in Belfast every night and the wee spides (chavs) broke into it a couple of times and managed to tear the steering wheel right off while trying to get the steering lock so eventually I just had it scrapped.

Fiesta van, 1100cc, red (ex fire brigade).

Pros - it went quite well.....once I figured out the distributer cap was cracked and replaced that.

Cons - nothing really, did exactly what it was meant to do for an £800 vehicle, which wasn't much! No expectations.

1999 V reg Corsa. Was a great car only cost me a exhaust, set of brake pads and a couple of tyres in 5 years.I still have it on the drive.I dont want to sell it as its worth nothing and would not like someone snagging my well used car.I think ill scrap it when i get annoyed of having it sat on the drive.

I was given an 850cc mini when my Mum bought a new car. This was used by my sister and I to learn in. First car I bought was a ford fiesta mk 2, 1.1 popular plus in red. Lasted 6 months before I p/ex'ed it for a 2 ltr Sierra Ghia. Loads of fun, rear wheel drive. Then had an Audi Coupe, 2.2 GT which I had loads of mods done to. Still my favourite car I have ever owned. Wrote it off coming out of the pub.
