The Open's not far away and I was just looking through some of the past winners at Sandwich. Some great names like Hagen, Locke, Lyle, Norman and then, er Ben Curtis

What do you prefer, a big grandstand name or one of the underdogs winning. Any dark horses for this year ?

Its always nice to see an unknown burst through

I remember Justin Rose coming 4th as an amateur years ago, and more recently Simon Khan last year at Wentworth.

But then again was great watching Tom Watson's battle 2 years ago.

Just cant wait to see some golf on the telly, dont have Sky and was away for the Masters

Fragger

Not sure Todd Hamilton or Ben Curtis were real crowd pleasing wins but I did admire Oosthuizen last year for holding it together on the last day. As long as it is decided by the quality of the golf and not by getting the best of any weather etc then I don't really mind. Always good to see a favourite, especially a Watson or Brit/Irish player in the mix in the final nine holes to keep it really interesting

I like to see an unknown come through if they then go on to become a top, top golfer. However, a one off winner who just had one or two good holes at the end of the tournament tends to leave me unimpressed.

EG

Fuzzy Zoeller won the Masters at the first attempt, but managed to go on to win another major, and become an interesting character on the tour.

But

Larry Mize became famous for one chip shot to take the 1987 Masters, but was otherwise, IMO, just another faceless tour pro of that era.

Schwartzel won the Masters with 4 great holes at the end of 72, so he didn't have the pressure of playing from the front, at all. A great achievement, yes, but I'll wait and see if he can step up to become a 'proper' top golfer before I accept him as a potential great.

I want whoever is playing the best to win The Open even if it's a Todd or Ben, a Rory or a Lee.
The best player wins it and becomes The Champion Golfer.
Big names have to earn Majors too..:..
