Had a one hour short game playing lesson today. The original intention had been to work on my pitching. Encouragingly my pitch shot technique is so much better but unfortunately it meant all my previous yardages were wrong. As we tried shots from 90, 80, 70, 60 & 50 yards for the first four I hit them straight over the flag and long. So technique good, accuracy good, distances need work.

So instead we focussed on chipping and putting. Now I learnt a lot of positive things about both but the thing that struck me most was what I learnt about my putting. My teaching pro wanted to check I could aim straight before we looked at green reading. So she placed a ball on the floor, aimed a laser at the middle of the ball, put a thin mirror on my putter and asked me to set myself up to putt the ball straight at the laser.

Once I was set up she took the ball away. Whilst she was happy with how straight I was aimed what was interesting was how high the laser hit the wall. This means I've been adding loft to my putts causing skidding and explaining some of my distance control problems. A little bitmore of a forward press and bingo :)

Very happy with the short game progress but plenty of hard work to do :)

If I am working on my putting I always take a mirror to make sure my eyes are over the ball and my shoulders are square. Its hard to make sure everything is set up properly and it doesn't take much to put the putting stroke out of kilter
