What Clubs First?

Hi all.
I am new to golf,... been playing now for about 3 months.
I have a basic set of clubs..Dunlop driver,.. Dunlop irons and putter.
My intention is to upgrade as I go along.
Would you advise I upgrade driver first, or irons, wedge or putter?
Or do you think I should stick with the Dunlop set until I get to grips with the game a bit more?
Thanks for taking the time to read..

It all depends on how confident you are with the clubs at the moment? If I were to change anything first it would the irons as these are what you will use most, and if you ever fall out with the driver, as most people do time to time, you can always use a long iron.

Then you can gradually build up the rest of your set, e.g. Drivers, fairway woods wedges.

A new set will definitely help giving you much better quality not just in the club manufacturer but the shaft as well. Depending on how you feel with the clubs at the moment will decide if you change them now or wait for a while

Welcome to the forum. I can only say what i would do if I were you and I think I would ask myself where I would get the most performance from. If you get on with your putter and you use a driver I think you would get most performance from a new driver.

Would personally look to upgrade the putter first, you play more shots with this than any other club

a colleague of mine had a £99 starter set and is in the same situation, he has upgraded to an Odyssey 2 ball and seen a huge benefit (he won the medal last week!)

Is Neal putting that down to his putting over his swing?

Not solely no but hes definitely 3 or 4 shots a round better on the greens than he was with the old putter (if you can call it a putter haha)

Hmm I would like 3 or 4 shots off my game, can I have your Scotty? :D

Thing is there is nothing wrong with your putter, youve just got magpie syndrome again, Neils was a lump of metal on a stick lol

And the answers still no

I would persist with what you have for the time being and continue to work on your ball striking and game overall. If you feel as though you want to upgrade and purchase higher tech equipment after that then I would firstly purchase a putter, then come back from there as if you were retracing your shots from the green. i.e putter, wedges, irons, hybrids, fairway woods, driver.

All the best!

Ash!!

Depends if they are usable or total rubbish.

I would start with a decent 3 wood.
Then a putter, then a driver.

If it helps, I bought my starter set last year, in August. A set of Wilson Pro Staff LCD's, which are fine. I have today upgraded my putter to a new Odyssey one which I used in Portugal a few weeks back.

I will keep the irons because they are exactly what I need, maybe in a couple of years I'll buy a new set, more because i'll want some rather than need them.

I am looking for a new hybrid(s), but not really in any rush, and would like to buy a new driver and 3 wood eventually. Again more because i want something new and shiny tho :D

Thanks for all your help. I have a lot to think about. I really want to remind myself it's about my swing and technique and not just shiny equipment.

Thanks again

I would hang on as long as possible learn with the starter set, first clubs I would add would be a hybrid & putter. After that maybe a 3 wood and the irons. Driver for me would be last or if you can't live without a big dog in the bag try and get a cheap 2nd hand one with a higher loft and high forgiveness.

All depends on how you find the clubs at the moment.

I'd invest first in lessons. I'm currently trying to track down a pro in my area to get my swing in check and get rid of my bad left to right slice. Doesn't matter if you've got £99 starter set or a £1000 set. If your swing is wrong then the clubs will be useless.

As other have said I'd then start with the putter. Find one that feel comfortable in your hands and has a nice weight so you can stroke the ball rather than smack it.

My next priority would be a good hybrid you feel happy with. This will give you an option of the tee and laying up on dog legs where you wouldn't be able to shape a driver, longer par 3's, longer fairway shots as well as chip and runs around the green.

Then look at an iron set, I don't personally feel a beginner benefits greatly getting higher lofted wedges and with most sets going 5-SW they'll cover every shot you'd want to play for now. When you feel you want that extra control and the shot options a higher loft would give then consider separate wedges.

Lastly the driver. It will most likely be the least used club in your bag so why go for it first?

This is how I see things anyway but I can't quite break 100 so what do I know ;)
