Wedges! (Not potato)

I have 47, 52 and 56 degree wedges, and my 60 is in the boot of the car. I don't think most players (including me) control the distance well enough with the 60, so although it is very helpful sometimes, other times it goes more wrong than a more conservative shot. I see no need for a 64 degree for any player, even a pro.

I ummed and aaahed about a lob wedge listened to the folk on here and didn't bother. My chipping is improving all the time and if I open the face on the 56 I get more than enough loft. I'm improving my course management as well so don't get short sided as often either. I've now got more room in the bag which I'll need when the Driver arrives in December :D

I couldn't be happier with mine. It's absolute money from about 65 yards out. Can stop the ball on a 2p piece. I don't use it around the green unless I really have to though.

But surely it all depends on what distance you leave yourself to the green. I hit my SW pretty well over 80 yards but I aim to leave myself about 110 yards for my PW so if I overcook it I'm in SW territory :D

My PW (100 Yrds) is 47 degrees. I carry a 52 (80-85 yards) and a 58 (65-70) and it is more than enough. If I need any loft around the green I'll open the 58 up and do the same with the 52 if I need something between the optimum 52 and 58 distances

Here's my setup for full swing

PW (47.5) - 125 yards
50 degree - 115 yards
55 degree - 100 yards
60 degree - 80 yards

Plus then I know my yardages for for quarter and half swing for each of them.
I use all of them around the green as well, just depends how much carry and rollout you need with each chip.

60 degree is a great club when you short side yourself though and you want a nice soft landing shot. I understand you can open the club face of a sandwedge but if your SW has a lot of bounce in my opinion it can make that type of shot a lot harder.

Cheers
Nick

I only have three wedges pw - 125 52 - 110 56 - 95 and can make the rest up as I go. When I was learning to play golf I was not allowed to get a SW until I could use the 9 iron for everything else!!

I have 47, 50, 54 and 58. They all go the same distance, and height. About 45 degrees right, 4 foot off the ground, about 35 yards.

I bet I could do the same with a 60 or a 64.

I am beginning to wonder why I need so many specialist clubs, when one shanking club would cover all the bases.

Ask your local pro for 'draw biased' wedges....then get him to close the face to roughly 45 degrees.

That should help.

:D

I think you need to know how far you hit the smaller (1/2 etc) shots as well so you can play a shot accurately and with confidence even if it isn't a full distance. I try and leave myself around 80 yards as my 52 is my favourite wedge but I'm equally happy with anything from 100 in.

I found my 60 was costing more shots than it saved and began to feel compelled to use it around the green to justify carrying it. I became a bit one-dimensional with my shot choice. I'm happier without it and I can play a bigger range of shots with my wedge set up now and with more confidence

47,50,54 and 58 for me.
Although I'm toying with dropping the 50 and 54 in favour of a 52. The 58 is a Cleveland CG15 Dual sole Grind so it doubles as a chipping/pitching kind of wedge and a sand wedge. We have quite lush rough around our greens most of the year so I find having choices helps. But I'm using the 50 and 54 less and less. Dropped my 58 79 yards to within a foot of the pin today. Great club.

I have an idea on distance but its usually feel, I find it takes away swing thoughts.

I love my reg up, I only hit full shots with my 50 mostly opting for the wedge punch. I got rid of the 60 as I just didn't need of with a 56 wedge.

Hi All

Well, I was going to rush out and buy a 64* wedge last year but ive found my 60* to be perfect for everything I need.

Im now wonderring if I even need my 60* and just use my 56* for everything.

What can you do with a 60* that you cant do with a 56?
Im not thinking of getting rid of it just yet, but anyone else been down this road?

To answer your question a good 58 is my main one. In bunkers, over bunkers with slight open face, shut face low run and check shots are all within the one club. As long as the club doesn’t have too much bounce it will open nicely.
