Following on from the "How much did you play in 2011" thread, I have decided to keep a record this year for reference, and so I can answer the same question more accurately at the end of the year :ears:. I know there are stat based applications out there that probably do all this and more, but decided to create a simple record in an excel spreadsheet. As I started building it, the ideas kept on coming, now I record the number of holes/ score and handicap played, I will then be presented with total holes, Home/ Away rounds, Average rounds per week, Average holes per week, points vs par, net strokes vs par and points vs handicap.

What a sad old geek I've become...

Best way to improve, it'll instantly show where you drop shots, at what stage in the round you drop most shots and what areas you can improve.

Sad but interesting!

Def worth recording putts per round, number of 3 putts and up'n'downs round the green. When these stats improve your scores will tumble

Damn you Craw, now I've got to go add some stuff on shots played too.......:(

Here's a few more for you.
Take note of the length of putt you sink on each hole.
How many times your approach shot to the geen comes up short.
How many times your approach shot to the geen comes up long.

thats a good 1 bob , i reckon 80 to 90 percent of the time your average amature comes up short, and were obsessed with getting back spin

Scoresaver 2 will do most of that for you. A great bit of sfotware including facility to records practice regime and time spent on each aspect. A one off hit and no further charges and run by a forum member (SS2)

you need to get out more ;) nah its actually quite a good idea and keeping track will definetely help you improve and it will be quite satisfying at the end of the year

you can fill out the 'coming up short' statistic right now, I reckon 90% of amateurs come up short 99.8% of the time:mmm:

There's a couple of website that track these stats for you too. I'm signed up to oobgolf.com and golfshake.com which give you various stats and graphs. The basic packages are both free but you can pay a couple of quid to activate some extras.

If you keep the geekiness up I am sure that your handicap will come down. Actually knowing what causes you to lose shots as opposed to what you thimk causes you to lose shots will lead to more refined practice. I will go out on a limb here and say you will come down 2 shots by June.
