Love them or hate them they are remarkable creatures. They are building a nest above my kitchen ceiling.
I had head a noise that sounded like a mouse chewing paper and been trying to find any other obvious signs that mice leave.......nothing. Added to this I kept hearing a noise upstairs that sounded like a cat purring...... I don't have a moggy.

On further investigation I found the beasties going through a crack in the mortar above the back door.
Not very happy about having to get the exterminator in but after googling the subject I think bringing in an expert is probably best ........even at 45.00 it could be money well spent.

Apparently they dont return to the same nest again so hopefully it wont be an annual expense.
Never had one before, is it a good year for the wasp? are they on the increase? by exterminating the nest apparently it could produce anything upward from 3000 :eek:
 
Trust me, they do return. I have seen wasp nests in lofts which are bigger than the cold water tank and had to be cut up to remove. If you can manage to reach the entrance where the wasps are entering the house, you can buy wasp nest destroyer from most garden centres, but don't confuse it with wasp/ fly killer spray. Normally these are a foam type spray which you spray into the entrance, preferably in the evening when the wasps have returned to the nest and one application should suffice. Once done seal the hole in the wall with a filler to prevent them returning next year. (If you can access the nest from the loft it would be better)
 
We had a wasp nest in a large conifer tree in our front garden 2 years ago , [ non council house ]
I called the local council environmental office and they sent a guy out the next day
He sprayed some kind of white powder stuff on the nest from a distance using a long lance , sorted for free, so worth giving them a call.
 
Thank you, I can see the entrance but it is just a brick joint so not much room, the nest is between a floor and ceiling so not very accessible. Will defiantly 're motor the bricks when I'm sure it's no longer in use.

I need to move North ..... its the council ive called in and its 45.00 ☹
 
I get 3 or 4 nests every year. Some of them are enormous. They dont come back to the same nest, but whilst the workers all die off in the winter, the queen hibernates, and then builds a starter home come spring. If the original nest was in a good place, she will hibernate nearby, and the starter home will then be in a similar place, so it looks like they come back.

They need poisoning as early as possible.
 
If you cant get at the nest, you can easily trap them - cut top part of a 2 litre soft drink bottle off and invert it back inside the bottle for a funnel effect, hold with a staple or some tape and if you want to hang it off a branch to keep it away from kids or whatever get some string through it. Put some sugar and fruit or jam, anything sweet in it and a few inches water, wasps will go in and cant get out and will drown -it's a bit brutal but you can kill enough pretty quickly to make the nest unviable. Worked for me when we'd a nest under eaves and into attic somewhere.
 
While I dislike wasps, I stood on a nest as a kid and got stung all over, the nests they build are a marvel of nature. I saw lots of little lines appear on a fence post, then just by chance I spotted a wasp land and start chewing the wood.

Clever little creatures, but damn evil to boot.
 
I've used a butane type torch before:) no escaping the heat and flames:)
Wish it was just wasps we had to worry about though, seen a few hornets recently around here......huge things and very evil.
 
Extermination complete, they certainly got a bit cross saw a couple chasing the guy back to his van :ooo:
All quiet now and hopefully won't return this year. The little blighters were flying out with white stuff in there chops which apparently was my plaster board :mad:

Probably really buzzing :whistle: after sniffing all that white stuff the guy gave them, :rofl:

We had a wasp nest in the chimney couple of years back, and they were coming down into the house. Had to light a fire, and keep it going for two days.:eek: Neighbours must have thought we were mad having a fire in summer. The smoke did seem to annoy them though. Wasps not neighbours.

Wasps are a minor irritant though compared to the hornets we get. They are huge and really aggressive. Wouldn't fancy being stung by one.

You must have missed the Disney out-takes show where in Bambi , Thumper says those famous words. “My mommy says , if you can’t say nuffin nice, then don’t say nuffin at all” it then goes on to say “unless it’s wasps you’re talking bout, coz they done count none” 😂😂😎
 
We've got loads at our course, they range from between 12 - 20 stone each and boy can they move fast....:eek:
