Was I right to carry on?

Background, I play of 26 h/c, on a course which I think is quite tough and measures over 6600 yards of the whites. Par 72

Saturday was monthly medal day and i decided to play in gale force weather, I was reliably informed that we had winds of 40 mph.

Obviously I struggled badly, and on one tee I actually hit 5 tee shots (we actually found my 3rd ball) I think I ended up with 10 penalty shots and ended up with a gross 128 net 102. I apologised continually to my 2 fellow players who both encouraged me to carry on, and we let two groups through.

But my question is, was I right to carry on? I was determined to put a card in and not N/R. One of the guys who we let through said that he N/R on the second hole? and the whole group had N/R by the 8th. I haven't seen the final results but someone said on Saturday that over 25% of the field had recorded N/R.

And just to rub it in, played in continual rain all day yesterday in one of our society days, after hardly any rain for 3 months.

Good for you for carrying on. The point is you now have a score to aim to beat !!! ( hopefully you wont get conditions like it again though ! ).

I think you were absolutely right. You've tested yourself in probably the hardest conditions you'll have faced and got a score to try an beat if you go out in similar again. Also, you might find yourself well placed in your division by getting the card in. Fair play to you (and your partners for encouraging you) for sticking at it when it must have felt soul destroying in places.

Yes you were right - why should you NR, why did you apologise to your playing partners for them giving up, they should be apologising to you for being losers.

Despite the score you will have learned something from the experience even if you dont think you did. How to swing in the wind, clubbing up and down, changing ball position, how the ball behaves in the wind etc etc. All a learning curve and good on you for not quitting.

Bet you slept well too!

I've NR'd on various occasions, usually because I'm too lazy to go back to the tee and play another ball, or I've snatched up the ball after my missed 4th putt. I always feel ashamed afterwards (and I'm not interested in getting back .1 either), so hold your head high and be proud that you persevered. Simply by completing your card you beat 25% of the field. I admire your determintation

Absolutely no question that you did the right thing. Improving your game is all about knowing your limits, so playing on in those conditions will stand you in good stead. Well done you and good luck with your game in the future.

As a high handicapper (no offical one but struggle to play to 28), I sympathise with the issues you outlined, especially the "Sorry" to playing partners.....a word that I use more than any other during a round (well, more than any one I could print here, that is!)

Great credit to you for carrying on under what were obviously harsh conditions. As a previous poster mentioned, merely by finishing and not N/R'ing, you beat 25% of the oppostion. Top work :)

All credit to you for playing on and posting a score. It shows good manners and respect for the sport. It's far too easy just to quit and n/r and to do it on the 2nd hole like one of the blokes is a disgarce.

It's far too easy just to quit and n/r and to do it on the 2nd hole like one of the blokes is a disgrace.

I did it on the 5th at Crowborough once.
Playing like an absolute pilchard and didn't have one Stableford point after 4 holes, stood on the tee and dumped one into the ravine.
Put another ball down and did exactly the same again.
Another blob was on it's way, and I'd had enough.
Made my excuses and left...and got a severe bollocking the following Wednesday from the comp secretary.... :o :o :o
Never did it again....unless you class walking off of Princes after 27 holes due to slow play in the same catagory.

Does this not just show why high handicappers shouldn't be playing medal? Surely players off 20 and above would be better off playing stableford from the off, as h/caps are based on this anyway. This way, can't score = pick up, less saying sorry, more keeping up with play.

Been saying it for years. Bonkers. Yet clubs love having medals (which are then split into divisions, so why not have the higher division as stableford?).

Sorry to hijack your thread, yes, you did the right thing carrying on, but the rules are just daft.

Absolutely; it's a frustrating game and the next time things get a bit tough you'll be able to draw upon that round and continue on. Well done (my last round had 2 N/R and felt like waste of time & money; even a 10 felt better).

N/R should stand for 'No Reason' they have actually played the comp for no reason after all, yes they may have enjoyed a round of golf or a walk, but how many have enjoyed it when they N/R? The purpose of the comp is to compete and hand in your results so they can be correctly analised and conclusions drawn, if you N/R you have played for no reason.

128 gross, lets say 2 practise swings on each shot = 384 bloody hell I'm glad I wasn't playing behind you.

Whats wrong with N/R's clearly if your not competeing all your doing is holding the rest up. I never heard such drivel, 5 tee shots at the 1 hole? Do you not know when your beaten. All this "well done mate" for finishing, rubbish just dosent do any good for the game. I pitty the poor guys who played with you and had to watch you. I bet their pints tasted good after that.
Next time your on the course and in a comp, think of other's and not just yourself,

Give yourself a pat on your back for comming last!

I see you'rve not lost your charm or ability to encourage others not as "gifted" as yourself mate. Nice words of encouragement there... :(

You were dead right in my opinion to carry on. I believe that when ever you enter a comp you give it your best shot even if your not playing well.

I had a similar experience when playing a medal comp and got a 12 on a par 3 200yds after going oob, loosing 2 balls and i just felt like getting off but i stood firm, carried on and that gave me a massive lift to perform better.

Excuse me if I'm being daft...
Is this a serious post or a little tongue in cheek????

Here we go again :(
FF, well done for not giving up.

Bob, I agree totally, I just get a little hacked off (excuse the pun) with the attitude shown by certain posters on here, who seem to (conveniently) forget that they too were once not quite as able as they are now. You, in particular, always seem to encourage fellow members on here. To display the contempt and sarcasm that is in one of the previous posts simply frustrates me and does nothing to change the view in certain quarters, that golf is "elitest" and "snobby".

Sorry to rant but it strikes a nerve :(

(Anyway, back to the vino and the multiple practice swings now).... ;)
